Witness the beauty of nature firsthand at Crex Meadows Wildlife Area.
A state-owned, 27,000-acre complex of marsh, woodlands and prairies, Crex Meadows Wildlife Area is located in Burnett County north of Grantsburg. Wildlife populations peak during the spring and fall, and with them wildlife viewing opportunities. Large numbers of waterfowl, such as Canadian geese and sandhill cranes, stop at Crex to feed and rest from April through May during their southern migration. The flocks return again during September and October on their return trip.
More than 260 species of birds call the meadows home -- colonies of nesting herons, breeding eagles and osprey, sharp-tailed grouse and trumpeter swans, plus large concentrations of sandhill cranes, waterfowl and eagles in the fall. An extensive road system, including eighteen miles of dike roads, offers excellent access and great vantage points for wildlife viewing.
