National Treasures: Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Small Rock Island

Located along the Lake Superior shoreline, the pristine Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is the perfect venue for a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities.

Just off the shores of the town of Bayfield on Wisconsin’s northern tip, this chain of 21 islands offer stunning rock formations as well as six historic lighthouses that are considered to be one of the finest collections in the country.

Designated as a National Lakeshore in 1970, the islands are known worldwide for their breathtaking sandstone cliffs and accessible sea caves. Kayakers come here from around the country, beginners for the many sheltered areas, the more advanced set for the chance to explore the many sea caves. All can enjoy the lighthouses and the many unspoiled beaches

The islands are also a haven for deepwater fishing and sailing.

Those who prefer to see the islands on foot can traverse more than 50 miles of hiking trails and explore abandoned quarries, historic logging sites and old farmsteads.

Also known for birdwatching, the Apostles provide nesting habitat for more than 150 bird species and serve as a rest stop for more than 250 more during spring and fall migrations.

For more information on this island chain, visit the Lakeshore's official web site, www.nps.gov/apis/home.htm.
