Wisconsin's springtime melt creates prime conditions for whitewater rafting
In the spring, Wisconsin rivers swollen with snowmelt and seasonal rain beckon adventure kayakers ready for a truly exhilarating experience.
In northern Wisconsin, the Peshtigo River, beginning near Crandon and running to Green Bay, features one of the longest stretches of active whitewater in the Midwest. Northeast of Crivitz, several outfitters in Athelstane rent equipment and run organized rafting trips on both the Peshtigo and Menominee rivers.
The Wolf River, starting as a trickle about 25 miles south of Wisconsin's northeastern border and flowing 223 miles to Lake Winnebago, provides exhilaration for even experienced paddlers. The Wolf has a reputation for being wild and unpredictable, with legendary Class II and Class III rapids. Several outfitters in Langlade, White Lake and Keshena offer equipment rental, and some organize rafting trips that range from one-hour excursions to daylong adventures.
