More than 1,000 bikers travel 490 miles from Eagle River to Prairie du Chien in the weeklong Great Annual Bike Adventure Along the Wisconsin River.

Ahnapee State Trail

Running for 31 miles through Kewaunee and Door counties, the Ahnapee State Trail is a wonderful combination of old and new.

Riders traversing the length of the Ahnapee can see everything from Great Lakes freighters in the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal to small fishing boats in Algoma to the state's famed orchards and dairy farms.

A former railroad bed, this rail-to-trail conversion follows the meandering Ahnapee River for 19 miles from Sturgeon Bay south to a rest point in Forestville and then on to the Lake Michigan port city of Algoma. From there it moves south and west for 12 more miles, passing through farmland, forests and the small inland towns of Rio Creek and Casco.

During spring, summer and fall, the eight to 10-foot wide trail has a firm surface for hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and horse-drawn carts and wagons. In winter, cross-country skiers and snowmobilers whisk across its frosty surface. The trail also connects with 95 miles of snowmobile trails in Kewaunee County and more than 200 miles of trail in Door County.
