Edgerton bills itself as “The Gateway to Lake Koshkonong,” a 10,400-acre lake located about midway between the metro areas of Madison to the north and Janesville to the south. The lake is a popular destination for fishing and water sports of all kinds. Known locally as Tobacco City USA, Edgerton was once the center of a thriving tobacco growing region of the state. As the importance of that crop declined, however, many of the city’s old tobacco warehouses have been repurposed.
Established in 1839, Milton was once a railroad hub in south-central Wisconsin. Milton College enlivened the community from 1844 until 1982. Today, several of the college buildings have found new life as antique shops, offices, apartments, and the city library. Nearby, the Milton House Museum attracts the historically inclined. This 1844 stagecoach inn was once a station on the Underground Railroad, complete with a secret escape tunnel.
