The Horicon Marsh covers 32,000 acres of Dodge County. Management of the marsh is split between the federal and state government; the northern two-thirds is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge, while the southern third is managed by the State of Wisconsin as the Horicon Marsh Wildlife Area. While the marsh is enchanting at any time of the year, spring and fall are truly spectacular. Hundreds of thousands of migrating waterfowl descend on the marsh, including geese, ducks, swans, cranes and heron.
The town of Horicon is located at the south end of the marsh among the hills overlooking the Rock River. While the marsh may be Dodge County’s best known attraction, the area includes a number of lakes that provide excellent recreational opportunities. In addition, the Wild Goose State Trail, a hiking, biking, horseback riding and skiing trail, runs through most of the county.
