Monroe

Monroe offers a charming downtown that spreads out around its Courthouse Square. The crown jewel of the square, and of Monroe, is the impressive Green County Courthouse, a Romanesque-style building dating from 1891 with a 120-foot clock tower. The art and business of making cheese has kept Monroe thriving for more than 100 years. Local cheese factories welcome visitors with samples and retail sales. The history of "Green County Gold" is on display at the Historic Cheesemaking Center in the restored Monroe Depot.
