Platteville

The area around Platteville was one of the first to be settled by Europeans, who were drawn there by rich lead deposits. The lead miners gave Wisconsin its nickname, the "Badger State." Platteville reflects its early 19th century origins with a pair of mining museums. A more contemporary preoccupation is reflected at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville campus, which hosts the city's Heartland Festival each summer - a month-long celebration of the performing arts. Southwestern Wisconsin is rich in history. For an interesting side trip, visit the First Capitol Historic Site in Belmont, or the Badger Mine Museum at Shullsburg.
