Prairie du Sac and Sauk City

These two Wisconsin River towns are so close together they are often referred to as “Sauk Prairie” – a contraction of their two identities. The towns are a favorite winter destination for birders – a power plant just north of town keeps a large pool of the river open in winter attracting dozens of eagles who fish those waters. Just across the river, the Wollersheim Winery is a favorite stop for wine lovers any time of year. Follow Highway 12 north of town about 5 miles to the site of the old Badger Army Ammunition Plant. Built at the start of WWII, the plant operated through the Korean and Vietnam Wars, but today is being dismantled and the land returned to nature. Across the highway from the plant’s main gate, visit Dr. Evermore’s Sculpture Park. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen; filled with giant, whimsical welded creations – steel animals, birds and spiders made from junk, plus his most famous work, the “Forevertron.” Two miles further north, Devil’s Lake State Park is a favorite for all who love the outdoors. This 10,000-acre gem offers 42 family campsites, 29 miles of hiking trails, 6 miles of mountain bike trails, and views of its lovely namesake lake from high atop the park’s 300-foot bluffs.
