Richland Center and Richland County

Richland County lies in Wisconsin’s “Driftless Area” – the southwestern corner of the state that was not bulldozed by the last great glacier 12,000 years ago. Consequently, the county’s topography is a maze of ridges and valleys with many great trout streams, but not many lakes. Richland Center is the county seat. Frank Lloyd Wright grew up in the area. One of the world’s great architects, his A.D. German Warehouse still stands in the city. The Pine River Trail runs from Richland Center south to Lone Rock. This 16-mile railbed trail is popular with bikers in the summer and snowmobilers in winter. Near the city’s trailhead, a unique, suspended pedestrian bridge spans a river slough. A drive through the county is often a rollercoaster ride from ridge to valley floor and back again. Visit local cheese factories for fresh curds. Near Blue River in southern Richland County, tour Eagle Cave – the state’s largest onyx cave. Near Rockbridge, visit Pier Natural Bridge Park to see the unique rock formation for which the park is named.
