Some 900 lakes sparkle within the borders of Washburn County in northwestern Wisconsin, complemented by miles of scenic rivers and acres of forestland. Riding stables, historical museums, golf courses, antique shops and a wildlife sanctuary are some of the many diversions offered.
Railroad aficionados love Spooner. Here, they can ride in elegant, refurbished railway cars dating from 1910 to 1930 aboard excursions offered by the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad. Spooner is also the home of the Railroad Memories Museum in the city’s former C&NW depot. In summer you can also tour Spooner’s state fish hatchery where the Wisconsin DNR grows musky, walleye and northern pike.
In Trego, just seven miles north of Spooner, arrange to canoe or “tube” down the Namekagon River. Fifteen miles further north, Minong is perhaps best known as the home of Link Bros. Recreational, one of the largest aluminum boat dealers in the world. If you’re looking for a new or used boat, these guys have acres and acres of them.
