Last Updated: 11/25/2015
If the bright sun, longer days and warmer temperatures have you craving a refreshing treat, Wisconsin is the place to satisfy your sweet tooth. Wisconsin is home to numerous creameries, custard stands, ice cream parlors, dairy shops and drive-ins where you can lick, taste and scoop your favorite flavors. Here is a list of some of our favorites that keep us coming back for more.
Ice Cream Cravings in the North
Island City Ice Cream – Minocqua
Open from April to mid-October, this summertime staple offers ice cream of all varieties. From premium hand-dipped ice cream to creamy soft serve and frozen yogurt, you are sure to find your favorite here. They also serve ice cream treats made in a blender such as shakes and malts, ice cream bars, personalized ice cream cakes and hot snacks.
A favorite Door County landmark, when visiting Ephraim in the summer, you must stop at Wilson’s. Serving home-brewed draft root beer, ice cream specialties, and flame broiled burgers, this stop is a classic trip back to 1908 when the restaurant and ice cream parlor was originally founded.
Belt’s Soft Serve – Stevens Point
Blended into a smoothie, mounded with your favorite sundae toppings, topped with fresh strawberries and raspberries in season, or simply enjoyed in a cone, Belt’s Soft Serve in Stevens Point is a favorite among the locals. Also featuring homemade fresh brownies, cookie dough and peanut butter cups—what a treat!
Frozen treats of the South
Kelley Country Creamery – Fond du Lac
The Kelley family uses milk produced at their 200-acre farmstead dairy and turns it into the multitude of premium ice cream flavors you can purchase at their Fond du Lac creamery. The farm has been in the family since 1861, and the pride of investing years to perfect each of their recipes comes out in each lick. Mmmm! Mmmm!
Ella’s Deli & Ice Cream Parlor – Madison
You can’t miss this favorite spot to bring children in Madison marked by the classic carousel out front. Enjoy a ride on the captivating 1927 carousel and then proceed to the ice cream parlor for your sweet treat to top off your perfect outing. Which sundae will you choose?
Babcock Hall Dairy Store – Madison
Located on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, the Babcock Hall Dairy Store is best known for the tasty varieties of ice cream flavors (some with silly names!), but don’t miss your opportunity to purchase the award-winning cheeses also sold at the store. Grab a scoop of Fantastic Jurassic or Badger Blast while you peruse their wide selection of cheeses sold in a bag for you to eat on the spot or packaged and ready for you to give away as a gift.
Leon’s Frozen Custard – Milwaukee
A Milwaukee landmark, this family owned and operated drive-in has been serving up custard that keeps patrons traveling for miles just to enjoy some for more than 50 years. Their menu also features a variety of hot sandwiches, so you can make a full meal out of your trip to Leon’s. Each day features one of six special feature custard flavors to choose from along with their regular menu of sundaes, shakes and malts.
