College Baseball Stars unite in Wisconsin for Summer Baseball

By Jerry Huffman

College summer baseball in Wisconsin is red hot! Some of the best college baseball players in the country converge in Wisconsin to play for one of seven Wisconsin baseball teams that compete in the Northwoods League. These teams are comprised of players representing the biggest collegiate athletic conferences in the country including the Big 10, SEC, ACC, Big East, Pac 12 and Big 12. Playing 70 games in 75 days makes for plenty of opportunities to catch a game this summer.

A new team, the Lakeshore Chinooks, make their debut in the summer of 2012. Based in Mequon the Chinooks play their home games at Kapco Park, a new stadium on the Concordia University campus. The Chinooks have one very large fish in their corner. Baseball Hall of Famer and former Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Robin Yount is one of the team’s co-owners.

Baseball in Madison: An Experience Like No Other

The Madison Mallards play their home games at Warner Park on a field affectionately named The Duck Pond. One does not merely attend a game at the Duck Pond…one experiences an evening at The Duck Pond.

Promotions at The Pond would make even PT Barnum shed a tear. There’s a human cannonball nicknamed, “The Bullet.” This season they have seven bobblehead nights planned, five fireworks evenings, four LEGO nights, and in mid-June former CHiPS co-star Erik Estrada will be there for Police Appreciation Night.

The food is also a big part of the entertainment at The Duck Pond. Two of the menu home runs—a bacon ice cream sundae with chocolate sauce and for what is likely the first time in baseball history, a beer float. Not a root beer float, mind you, but imagine your favorite brew mixed with a healthy serving of ice cream.
