Silent winter sports such as snowshoeing and cross country skiing are a great way to enjoy the wonderful Wisconsin outdoors in a more relaxing setting. Here are three destinations to participate in a silent winter sport as well as a unique place to stay and eat!
North End Snowshoe Trail

The North End Snowshoe Trails are part of a cross country ski and snowshoe trail system. The snowshoe trails were established specifically for snowshoeing and are mapped and marked. There are three loops offering a range of distances from a short 1.1 mile hike to hikes of almost 6 miles. The trails use a combination of old woods roads and rustic single track trail. They travel mostly cross country and take you deep into the beautiful, snow-covered woods – be sure to watch for wildlife, like birds and deer while you enjoy the beauty!. The terrain is varied, from rolling hills to flat landscapes, making these wonderful trails enjoyable for a range of abilities, from newbies to old pros.

One of the most beautiful areas to see in Stevens Point is Schmeeckle Reserve, set on 275 acres of wetlands, forests, prairies and a lake, which attract an array of songbirds, raptors and waterfowl and include many miles of nature trails. During the winter, Plover River ski trail (6.2 miles) and Iverson Park (2.4 miles) are open for classic cross-country skiing, while the rest of the Green Circle is open to snowshoeing and winter hiking. Within the reserve, you will find the Schmeeckle Reserve visitor center, which offers an opportunity to learn more about the reserve and environmental history. In the visitor center, be sure to check out the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, which highlights Wisconsin’s environmental history and the importance of natural resources in our everyday lives.
