Last Updated: 10/29/2013
With pristine landscapes and more than 325 miles of beautiful groomed trails, the Superior/Douglas County area offers activities from snowmobiling to skijoring, cross country skiing and ice fishing making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Area trails provide panoramic views on over 325 miles of groomed trails that link Douglas, Ashland and Bayfield counties. Visitors will find bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities along with fantastic dining and lodging facilities, making this area ideal for a winter getaway. Here are some highlights:
Cross-country skiers, make sure your skis are ready to go! Superior Municipal Forest, Brule River State Forest, Pattison State Park, and Solon Springs are renowned for their abundance of perfectly groomed ski trails and picturesque views - so don't forget the camera. And no need to leave your pooch at home! Skijoring (dog-assisted cross-country skiing) is offered in Superior, as well.
Marvel at beautifully frozen falls, bubbling rapids and snow-covered pine trees while snowshoeing at Amnicon Falls and Pattison State parks. Pattinson State Park is home to Big Manitou Falls, the tallest waterfall in the state at 165 feet, and Little Manitou Falls, a 31-foot twin waterfall. Both are Travel Green Wisconsin certified and offer miles of trails for a great winter hike.
Skiers and snowboarders will find fun at Mont du Lac. Nestled in a beautiful wooded forest of 425 acres and overlooking the St. Louis River, the mountain features vertical drop of 315 ft. with 8 runs, terrain park, and the region's only hi-speed tow to zip you back up the mountain. Mont du Lac offers lessons, as well, perfect for a family weekend getaway.
Starring Lake Nebagamon, the St. Croix Flowage and the Upper St. Croix River, anglers cast their lines in search of walleye, panfish and northern pike. Yep, ice fishing is bountiful thanks to the numerous frozen water sources in the area.
After playing outside all day, rest your head at Barkers Island Inn Resort & Conference Center. Located on an island in the Duluth/Superior Harbor, Barker's Island Inn overlooks Lake Superior's harbor. Offering comfortable rooms and relaxing suites, Barkers Island Inn is also conveniently located near charming downtown Superior, perfect for shopping and dining. Be sure to have dinner at Captain Barker's Restaurant & Lounge for delicious steak, seafood and pasta. Also be sure to check out Grizzly's Wood Fired Grill for a mouth-watering wood fired menu.
