Five Great Farmers' Markets

by Lisa Kivirist

Wisconsin is home to more than 70 farmers’ markets, each offering a slice of authentic local life, along with tasty seasonal bounty. Here are five of our favorites. Most markets run May through October.

Fondy Farmers’ Market, Milwaukee
Bringing healthy, affordable food to this diverse Milwaukee neighborhood, the Fondy Farmers’ Market is the city’s largest outdoor market. Much of the abundance you’ll find here is grown by Hmong farmers. 7 a.m.-4 p.m., Sat.; 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Sun.–Thurs. 2200 West Fond du Lac Ave., Milwaukee; (414) 933-8121, fondymarket.org.

Cameron Park Farmers’ Market, La Crosse

Located in the heart of downtown, this market is held under a unique permanent canopy that lets vendors sell prepared foods and refrigerated meats and cheese. 3 p.m.-8 p.m., Fri. King Street between 4th and 5th streets, La Crosse; (608) 452-2315.

Dane County Farmers’ Market, Madison
On and around Capitol Square in downtown Madison, the Dane County Farmers’ Market is reported to be one of the largest producer-only farmers’ markets in the country—and a Saturday morning tradition besides. Around Capitol Square, 6 a.m.-2 p.m., Sat.; 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Wed. Madison; (608) 455-1997, madfarmmkt.org.

Hillsboro Farmers’ Market, Hillsboro
Local Amish vendors add local flavor to this weekly small-town market with baked goods, preserves, and noodles, all delivered to market in horse-drawn buggies. 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Sat. Field Veterans Memorial Park, Hillsboro; (608) 489-2521.

Ashland Area Farmers’ Market, Ashland
Located on historic Chapple Avenue, near a coffee house, bakery, and food co-op, the Ashland Area Farmers’ Market is a social event, tempting shoppers to linger and chat as well as buy local produce. 8 a.m.-noon, Sat. On the 200 block of Chapple Ave., Ashland; (800) 284-9484.
