Family Fun to Beat Cabin Fever

Kids bouncing off the walls? Here are a couple of things to try. You might even enjoy them yourself.

Eagle Watching

While many animals take a long winter rest, bald eagles take to the skies. Wisconsin has North America’s largest population of wintering eagles, concentrated primarily along the locks, dams and power plants of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers. Top watching spots are Sauk City and Prairie du Sac, where eagles fish throughout the winter in the fast flowing Wisconsin River below the Prairie du Sac dam. On the Mississippi, Cassville hosts Bald Eagle Days. Visitors enjoy guided bus tours to prime sighting locations, plus a variety of programs and exhibits devoted to these magnificent birds.

Snow Tubing

Spinning down a slope totally out of control is great fun whether you’re a kid or a grown-up. Not having to walk your tube back up the hill when you’re done is even better. Cascade Mountain, Sunburst Ski Area, Telemark Resort and Christmas Mountain Village are just four of the sixteen locations found throughout the state that offer special runs and snow tube lifts, helping to make this classic winter activity an all-around favorite.

Indoor Waterparks

Had enough of the cold? Explore the great indoors at one of Wisconsin’s many indoor waterparks, which are continually one-upping each other with bigger and faster rides. Some of the newest include a Foil Tec enclosed waterpark where guests can tan year-round at The Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort in the Dells, a 60,000 square-foot indoor waterpark at the Dells’ Chula Vista Theme Resort and a 48,000 square-foot indoor waterpark with feature 5 slides, wave pool, lazy river and interactive area at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Camp Resort in Warrens.

Planetariums

Nothing beats looking at the stars on a frosty, clear winter’s night. You can see stars during the day too, and even stay warm, at a planetarium. Barlow Planetarium, on the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley campus in Neenah, lets you experience the night sky in a whole new way — on a 48-foot projection dome with 3-D special effects and surround sound. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Planetarium offers programs on a variety of topics, such as the astronomical phenomena the Aurora Borealis.
