Wisconsin Sand Dunes
Last Updated: 12/31/2013
Wisconsinites are spoiled by Lake Michigan. The glimmering gem of a Great Lake features a flurry of recreational activity and scenic settings. Adding to the breathtaking beauty? Wisconsin’s sand dunes.
But sand dunes do more than just sit there looking pretty. They play an important role in protecting inland areas from damaging waves and supporting an array of plants and wildlife. If you think you’d dig the dunes, we know where to find the best in the state. Might we suggest a day-trip to the beach?
Kohler-Andrae State Park is one of the last natural preserves and one of the longest stretches of dunes along the Lake Michigan shoreline. It boasts miles of white sand dunes against shimmering blue waters, and recreational activities for everyone.
Whitefish Dunes State Park on the eastern shore of the Door Peninsula is another destination worth exploring. Their rugged shoreline is home to the highest sand dunes in Wisconsin, some topping 90 feet at its largest. Day-use only.
