Fun on Wheels: RV Camping in Wisconsin
Last Updated: 7/12/2013
Does the spirit of camping appeal, but the reality of roughing it rub you the wrong way? RV camping might be the answer. You can explore the great outdoors, commune with nature to your heart’s content, and then retreat for a bit of homey comfort.
Hitting the road in an RV also lets you discover new sides of Wisconsin fun. From wooded serenity at State Parks, to pools and activities at private campgrounds, the opportunities for RV adventures are limitless. If you don’t have an RV, don’t feel left out...you can always rent one!
Here are some of our favorite RV-friendly destinations to get your wheels turning:
Buffalo County Resort, Waumandee
The relaxing Buffalo County Resort has its own stocked trout stream, and sits across the street from the historic Waumandee House restaurant and Waumandee Country Store. Just minutes away from the Mississippi, it’s an ideal starting point for exploring Wisconsin’s Great River Road.
Brunet Island State Park, Cornell
The park’s picturesque camping areas are on an island in the Chippewa River, with a swimming beach and hiking trails. The shore area of the park connects to both the Old Abe State Trail and the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Brunet Island State Park is Travel Green Wisconsin Certified.
Lake Joy Campground, Belmont
Enjoy swimming, boating and fishing on a private, spring-fed lake. Lake Joy Campground is also part of the Tri-County ATV Trail System, with back-road trails open to cyclists and hikers as well as ATV riders.
Willow Mill Campsite, Rio
Willow Mill boasts a spring-fed lake, a trout stream, a swimming pool, mini golf, wi-fi access, and a full calendar of activities. Not to mention fresh bakery on Sunday mornings.
This was summer home to the Chicago Police Chief in the Capone era – we figure that’s a guy who knew a good getaway when he saw it. With large, wooded RV campsites, and sandy beaches on Lower Eau Claire Lake, the Enchanted Inn is still a great escape.
Wild West Campground and Corral, Amherst
Take your RV out West…in Central Wisconsin. Wild West Campground and Corral offers hayrides and trail rides, and promises that their ranch horses are gentle enough for first-timers, but well-enough trained that experienced equestrians will enjoy them too.
Ahnapee River Trails Campground, Algoma
Ahnapee River Trails Campground is a quiet country setting on Door County’s doorstep. Take full advantage of fishing or canoeing in the Ahnapee River, hiking or biking on the Ahnapee State Trail – or indulge in pure poolside relaxation.
Sweet Minihaha Campground, Brodhead
The Sugar River gives the Sweet Minihaha Campground its sweetness. Fish from its banks, or take advantage of tube, canoe, and kayak rentals. Check the campground calendar for fun activities like horseshoe tournaments, kids’ crafts, live bands, and movies at dusk.
If your sense of adventure isn’t exactly leading you outdoors, try one of these:
Menominee Casino Resort, Keshena
Is the RV only one aspect of your high roller lifestyle? Well, you’re in luck. The Menominee Casino Resort has an on-site RV park. Avail of unlimited access to their pool, spa, and fitness rooms. As you might guess, shuttle service to and from the casino is available too.
Wisconsin State Fair Park, West Allis
The only RV park in metro Milwaukee, State Fair Park’s RV sites put you near Milwaukee’s museums, festivals, sports, shopping, and dining – and of course, in late July/early August, the Fair itself.
If your RV plans include time in Wisconsin State Parks, check the Department of Natural Resources camping reservation site to find and reserve your RV campsite.
