Sights and Sounds of Milwaukee

Brittany Roskom spent a year as Miss Milwaukee, and was a preliminary to the Miss America Pageant.

There’s no place like home…there’s no place like home… and I click my red sparkle shoes together. Wisconsin is an amazing state that so many people have yet to discover. Although I have visited many hot spots in Wisconsin through the years, my favorite vacation destination is also my home, Milwaukee.

As Miss Milwaukee 2011, I have a difficult time pointing to one part of Milwaukee that is my favorite, so I will name a few. No matter what day, week, month, or season you choose to visit Milwaukee, you will find a favorite destination and memory.

One of my favorite destinations is The Milwaukee Repertory Theater. I have been part of The Rep’s family since I was a young girl. My parents took me to performances at least once or twice a year. From “The Nerd” and “A Christmas Carol” to “Cabaret,” I have been an avid theater attendee. Today I still frequent the theater and am an active member of The Friends of the Rep. We focus on fundraising and supporting the theater. The Milwaukee Repertory Theater is a gem to the Milwaukee community and should be the number one stop for any visitor.

Another one of my favorite destinations is the Milwaukee lakefront. There is something so peaceful and beautiful about Milwaukee’s lakefront on a morning run. As someone who has trained for two half marathons and now training for a full, the lakefront has been a perfect place to practice my running. It is a breath of fresh air, a sense of calm and peace, and also a place to let go of all your worries. Milwaukee may not be a Cocoa Beach in Florida or a Laguna Beach in California, but it has its own beauty and sense of peace.

Finally, what would a Wisconsin vacation be without amazing food? The food is just one more reason why Milwaukee is a top-notch vacation spot. Besides the number of brewery tours you can take, you can also find fantastic food throughout the city. From Japanese to Moroccan, Mexican, to Chinese or a good old Wisconsin brat, you can find it all in Milwaukee. The city continues to grow and expand, bringing new sights and new smells.

I truly have been a blessed individual to have a place like Milwaukee to not only call my top vacation spot, but also my home. Whether it’s the theater, museums, festivals, or sporting events, there truly is no place like home.

Brittany Roskom grew up in Slinger, Wisconsin and migrated to Milwaukee where she doubled majored in Communication Studies and Broadcasting and Electronic Communications at Marquette University. She currently lives in Madison. Brittany spent a year as Miss Milwaukee, a preliminary to the Miss America Pageant. When she isn’t volunteering with The Friends of The Milwaukee Repertory Theater, taking dance classes, or running, Brittany loves spending time with her family and friends and two Shi Tzus, Frasier and Kirk.
