Take a Seat: Outdoor Dining in Wisconsin
Last Updated: 6/30/2013
While Wisconsin is home to four glorious and unique seasons, today we’re zeroing in on one: patio-dining season. Whether it’s by a pier, on a sidewalk, or in a more intimate setting, patio dining is a great way to soak up Wisconsin’s outdoors. Here are a few places you can go for some fresh air, great food, and unique views.
Milwaukee has dozens of options for outside dining, but anywhere along the Milwaukee River is a good place to start. If you’re downtown by the RiverWalk, give the Milwaukee Ale House, Water Buffalo or Rustico a try. Diners farther south can dine and play volleyball at the Horny Goat Hideaway or Barnacle Bud’s in the Bay View neighborhood.
In Green Bay
For travelers a few hours north, Hinterland in Green Bay is your destination for an outdoor oasis. Order a beer from Hinterland’s microbrewery, then make your way outside to their secluded patio surrounded by foliage. Relax by the fire pit on cooler evenings or pull out your sunglasses and soak up the sun in the heat of summer. The key to Hinterland’s menu is its partnerships with local farmers to ensure a high-quality ever-changing list of options. Be sure to check out their Milwaukee location, too!
In Eau Claire
Mona Lisa’s Restaurant is a great patio spot for the traveler who wants options. The restaurant has a sidewalk café for people watching and a garden patio for a more intimate setting. With a name like Mona Lisa, it’s no surprise Italian cuisine is their specialty, but many of the recipes on order are inspired in-house and based on seasonal availability. The food changes weekly, so every visit is a new experience.
How could an outdoor dining list be complete without at least barbecue option? Grab a seat on this rooftop patio and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Madison skyline at the Brickhouse BBQ. This restaurant features all the classic offerings of a barbecue pit plus three bars offering 40 different taps.
