Wisconsin’s Hot on Ice Fishing
Last Updated: 12/6/2013
While ice fishing may require cold weather, it couldn’t be a hotter activity this time of year. If you’re ready to drop that pole into the ice, we have a list of events for you to head to.
Die-hard fishers often spend cold winter days in ice shanties ranging from luxurious retreats with carpeting, heat and televisions to more humble homemade shelters. No matter what the accommodations, hardy anglers drill holes in the ice and tap into winter’s cold weather catch. And with 15,000 lakes and over 160 species of fish, there are plenty of options. Plus, with the annual free fishing weekend on January 18-19, amateur and seasoned anglers alike can enjoy the waters at no cost.
If you're thinking about joining in on the fun, check out these events across the state. Just be sure to bring the auger and heated shanty.
Otter Street Fisheree in Oshkosh - February 1, 2014
This annual ice-fishing tournament takes place on Lake Winnebago. Wisconsin’s largest inland lake offers plenty of fish to go around – and the event keeps the live music playing and the food cooking all day long. If you’re having an unlucky day on the ice, take a break and check out the event’s motorcycle and off-road racing.
Ice Fishing Jamboree in Spirit - February 8, 2014
The Ice Fishing Jamboree in Spirit awards competitors cash prizes in several categories – and they don’t even charge an entry fee. Guests can participate in a raffle drawing and warm up from the chilly weather in a heated tent while enjoying brats, chili and some pretty impressive “fish tales.”
