Wisconsin Bakeries: The Great American Pie

February is Great American Pies Month. (Shouldn’t that be every month?) Well, we figured we’d embrace this very serious holiday by highlighting some of the best bakers and dough makers in Wisconsin. Here are just a few pies that we know will make your mouth water and your winter warmer.

This three-pound monster from The Elegant Farmer is still baked inside the oven, but it’s placed inside a paper bag first, which steams the apples. You know it’s good because it won on “Throwdown with Bobby Flay.” In fact, The Wall Street Journal touts Elegant Farmer’s signature paper bag apple pie as the best pie in America. In addition to baking over a quarter million pies each year, The Elegant Farmer hosts pick-your-own apples, hayrides, a stocked farm stand and fun family events all year long.

Sour Cream Lingonberry Pie from Norske Nook — Osseo, Rice Lake, Hayward, Eau Claire
Sour cream pies at Norske Nook (like blackberry and raspberry) are a crowd favorite. The secret to getting a slice of lingonberry – a tangy, snappy berry – is asking for it (because it’s not on the menu). Norske Nook has received 23 blue ribbons while competing in the National Pie Championship in Florida, including awards for their apple cream cheese, coconut pineapple dream and raisin bread pudding pies.

Lemon Crumb Pie from Upper Krust Pie Shop — Watertown
When Upper Krust says “flavor of the day,” they don’t mean custard. For them, it’s all about the pie. From German chocolate to peaches ‘n cream, the variety is amazing. For those looking to fill their stomachs before satisfying their sweet tooth, enjoy a homemade potpie, old-fashioned meatloaf or beef stew. They even cater.

Pecan Pie from Sweetie Pies — Fish Creek
Pies just like grandma used to make are what make this Door County bakery so popular. Rachel Ray has included Sweetie Pies’ pecan pie on her list of top 10 pies in the U.S. In addition to pies, Sweetie’s also indulges customers with homemade chocolates. Even better, you can take one of their classes on pie baking or chocolate making to recreate your own masterpieces at home.
