Eagle River: A Classic Northwoods Getaway
Posted on: 12/20/2012
For the classic northwoods getaway, it doesn’t get much better than Eagle River. When the temps drop and the snow falls, this popular area of northeast Wisconsin becomes a hot spot for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. If you’re looking for a trip filled with winter fun and fantastic food, then the itinerary below should be right up your alley.
For a hearty breakfast, look no further than Leif’s Cafe, just off the snowmobile trail and a hop away from the World Championship Derby Race Track. Get your fill of fresh fruit crepes or a local favorite: chipped beef on toast.
Next, if kids are part of your party, head to Northwoods Children’s Museum. They’ll have a ball exploring 22 exhibits like a mini log cabin, weather center and bubble science station.
When you aren’t busy cross-country skiing on the Anvil National Recreation Trail or kicking up powder on the Chequamegon-Nicolet snowmobile trails, be sure to stop at the Christmas House gift shop. There you can browse thousands of ornaments on a forest of trees, along with other holiday treasures.
The Ice Palace is another must-see. Each year, volunteers put in more than 700 hours cutting blocks of ice from the lake to build a castle. The finished product decked with colored lights makes for the perfect photo opportunity.
Ready to warm up? Swing by Eagle Lanes for bowling and homemade pizza. Stop in on the weekend for live entertainment. For classic northwoods dining head to The Wicked Grill and enjoy a cozy ambiance in a beautiful log building. Get your fill of Beer Cheese Smoked BBQ Ribs (we recommend the Wicked spicy sauce), Northwoods Walleye Filet or Maple Glazed Chicken.
When it’s time to catch some Z’s, rest your head at Boettchers Country Lakehouses where you’ll find satellite TV, fire places, and easy access to snowmobile trails. Or bunk up at Avan’s Knotty Pine Cottage for a cozy rustic retreat.
