Mark Tauscher’s Best of Wisconsin Dells
Posted on: 12/24/2010
Hi there, everybody. Well, let’s cut right to the chase. I want to personally wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Sunday night was gut-wrenching. I could not have been more impressed with how the guys came out for that game and played with that New England team. We had an outstanding game plan on both sides of the ball and ultimately just came up a few plays short. I think Matt Flynn showed a lot of people what most of us in the Packers locker room already knew; that he is a bright young player with a great future in front of him. And how about my good buddy John Kuhn? Play after play, game after game, John continues to hurdle players and make key plays for our team.
As for this week’s entry…I know we’ve talked about a number of different vacation ideas over the course of the year, but there was one place I realized I hadn’t hit on. When thinking about tourism and travel in the state of Wisconsin, it’s hard not to highlight Wisconsin Dells. To me, the Dells is a perfect vacation spot for families in the state of Wisconsin. Even though the temperatures have already dipped into the single digits, it is still possible to maintain a warmer state of mind by enjoying some of the indoor waterparks the Dells have to offer.
But saying the Dells only have indoor waterparks would be a restrictive characterization. The area features a number of beautiful resorts, and a wide variety of restaurant choices, shopping and entertainment options for everyone to enjoy.
One of my favorite spots in the Dells, a place that I have frequented with friends and members of my family has been The Wilderness Resort. The views from the resort looking out over Lake Delton are breathtaking. It is an incredible atmosphere and the resort also features a number of indoor and outdoor water rides. It’s awesome to see people both young and old enjoying themselves on all of the different rides.
At this point, you guys know I am not going to make it through an entire post without incorporating dining into some aspect of the entry. So with that said, I will tell you about Field’s, the excellent steakhouse inside The Wilderness. Field’s has some of the best food in town and it is definitely a spot I look forward to every time we venture to the Dells. The highlight however, may be the Butter Brickle Crunch Torte that the restaurant offers for dessert. I don’t think me describing it will do it justice but it is listed on their menu as ‘English toffee ice cream layered and topped with butter crunch and drizzled with warm caramel sauce.’ Absolutely delicious.
Another great restaurant in the area is Sarento’s, an elegant Italian establishment that we make sure to hit on all of our trips. With regards to their menu, I suggest starting off with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon and an order of bruschetta. If you are lucky, you might be able to hear Timmy Lucke and Ryan Klongland doing their best Elton John and Billy Joel rendition on the piano to set the mood for the night. The lasagna and chicken marsala are just two of our favorite dishes on the menu.
A great couples activity for anyone traveling to the Dells is a trip to the Sundara Inn and Spa. The atmosphere at Sundara is unmatched with their Zen-like rooms and impressive Kohler tubs and showers. We have been there during the summer when you are able to enjoy the infinity pool and outdoor bar/restaurant in the tranquil forest setting after many of the wonderful treatment options the spa has to offer. You would think that in the winter, one would have to stay indoors but with their hot tub and outdoor fireplace, you feel incredibly comfortable sitting out there and seeing the snow fall around you. If you want to shop, there are plenty of options available to keep everyone happy, such as the Tanger outlet mall or the shops that line downtown.
In the Dells there are many things that are out of the ordinary. When you are driving into town, you could stop at Top Secret, which is designed to look like an upside down White House. Halloween is a great time to stop as it is full of hidden secrets and passageways. It is something you need to see for yourself. A favorite of young children is a trip on the Riverside & Great Northern Railway. Riding the live steam train along a three mile scenic landscape including canyons, forests and different rock formations is always a big hit with kids.
There is so much to do, from the Original Wisconsin Ducks rides, Mt. Olympus, Noah’s Ark Waterpark, the Tommy Bartlett Show, kayaking and canoeing, boating and fishing. I can remember as a child making the trek down from Auburndale to the Dells and specifically Noah's Ark. While there, we battled through the wave pool, Jungle Rapids, Dark Voyage, and relaxed on the lazy river. But the Plunge was always my favorite slide, as I would always get to the top and want to climb back down. Usually I didn't and it never disappointed. We also had some epic mini golf battles, as you can find a course at numerous locations. There are also roller coasters and go-karts, and they are just as much fun for kids as adults; at least that is what I tell myself when I have battled a five-year-old for the checkered flag. While boating down the Wisconsin River, it is also fun to stop at a sand bar along the way for a cook out and games with other boaters. Other boaters can be helpful if Chad Clifton is your skipper and you put him in charge of gas.
Wisconsin Dells has again been ranked the number one family vacation destination in the United States. The area has continued to grow and continues to be a great vacation spot for families all over the United States. Lucky for us Wisconsinites, it is right in our backyard.
Well, that’s a wrap for this week - a little glimpse into the leisure and fun to be had at the Wisconsin Dells. Good luck with all of your last minute Christmas shopping and enjoy the weekend time off with your families. We have a big one on Sunday at Lambeau and this is a New York Giants team that needs a win just as bad as we do. Should be fun to watch! This entry was posted in Things to Do and tagged Accomodations
