Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba

Madison

Bassekou Kouyate has been sharing his traditional Mali music in an ever-increasing crescendo of popularity. Touting a Ngoni, a tradition stringed luke-like instrument from his native home, Kouyate has created a name for himself both on and off the stage. He and his band, Ngoni Ba, have traveled the world over spreading their unique mix of hearty vocals, strings, and drums. At a time when the political instability in Mali had reached a screeching frenzy, Kouyate and Ngoni Ba brought harmony and their message to the rest of the world. Their second album, I Speak Fula, was Grammy-nominated. Their most recent album, Jama Ko, meaning “big gathering of people,” is an argument for the continuation of music in the Malian culture, which is currently at risk of annihilation due to some religious beliefs. Despite the intense meaning and passion fueling the music, Bassekou Kouyate’s fun and lively performances translate over any culture.
