Love's Labour's Lost
A different kind of comedy from Shakespeare–”Love’s Labor’s Lost” features the crisscrossed lovers in many of his plays–the King of Navarre and his bumbling friends and the Princess of France along with her lovely court of ladies. The boys make an ill-advised and poorly timed vow to commit themselves to an oath of self-improvement: study, fast and abstaining from the company of all women. As the men scramble to keep their oath in the face of the ladies’ arrival, they begin to fall in love and ultimately break their vow, resolving to “…woo these girls of France.” However, the course of true love never did run smooth as the boy’s wooing is interrupted by important news from France.
