Afro-American music - the great fusion that gave us jazz, blues and rock and roll - is captured in its purest form by The Persuasions. For decades they have been taking a -cappella music to ever-new heights, reminding generations of musicians that the human voice is the subtlest and most powerful of all instruments. The Persuasions started out informally in Brooklyn in 1962, five guys who gathered at the end of the workday to sing on street corners and in the subway. Their harmonies reflected a heavy gospel influence but also soul, R&B and pop. Since the 1960’s, their consistently enjoyable music has breathed life into the A cappella tradition. Founded by Jimmy Hayes, The Persuasions have released at least a dozen acclaimed albums since being discovered by Frank Zappa fifty years ago. They have covered gospel and popular music of each decade in which they performed and recorded, including the music of Frank Zappa, the Grateful Dead, Roy Hamilton, Jerry Butler, Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, U2, and the Beatles. Signed to Capitol in their most productive period of the 1970’s, they stay relevant in the new millennium by reinterpreting songs for a new generation. The Persuasions have toured, performed, and recorded with Joni Mitchell, Liza Minnelli, the Grateful Dead, and Ray Charles. In addition to their own recordings, they have appeared on albums by Joni Mitchell, Don McLean, and Paul Pena, and their version of "Papa Oom Mow Mow" appeared on the soundtrack of Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Having won over multiple generations throughout their impressive careers, The Persuasions have proven time and again that their traditional a cappella-style talents fill an irreplaceable role in the world of music.
