Saxon Harbor, on Lake Superior, was the most popular gateway to the Flambeau Trail. This was the only route inland into the dense forest until the late 1880s. In the 1700s, the Trail became the highway over which trade goods were exchanged for beaver pelts. French Canadian voyagers carried fur pelts, gunpowder and other trade goods in 80-pound packs over the difficult portage.
