Bayfield's annual 5- and 10-kilometer snowshoe races honor local hero Asaph Whittlesey, who snowshoed 250 miles in the 1870s to protest the area’s lack of railroads.

Located on Madeline Island, the largest of 22 Apostle Islands, this 2,418-acre park sports rugged wooded cliffs with dramatic views of Lake Superior. It contains a State Natural Area that is open for use by the public. Habitats include bogs, barrier beach, boreal forest and old growth hemlock. 1.5 miles of Lake Superior shoreline. Mile long boardwalk, drinking fountain, viewing platform, visitors center, gift shop.
