Big Elk Snowmobile Tour

Details

For the past ten years, snowmobiling has been booming in Ashland County. Most people come to get away from it all, and Ashland County is a good place to do just that. With more than 220 miles of trails and most of the county's population centered in Ashland, there's plenty of solitude on the trails. If you jump off from Clam Lake, you might catch sight of Wisconsin's newest ecological masterpiece - an elk herd. Reintroduced in 1995, the Clam Lake herd is the first to grace northern Wisconsin in 120 years. The forest and bog of the Chequamegon National Forest suit the elk well. The herd has grown from 25 to 34 animals with nine calves born in 1997. While the herd moves, they have stayed near their release area three miles south of Clam Lake. If you'd like to take a look at these giants of the woods, stop in at the Chequamegon Junction store in town to check on their latest location.
