Located on Lake Superior along the western portion of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, sandstone caves were formed by wave action. The caves are accessible only by boat for much of the year; but with the right conditons, by mid-to-late winter the lake water is frozen solidly enough that adventurers can walk on its surface. Massive icicles hang from the red cliffs and caverns, and waves appear to be captured in ice, creating a unique scene that resembles something out of the artic.
