The Madeline Island Wilderness Preserve lands are crossed by several trails that are open to hiking in summer, and cross-country skiing in winter. A 2,400-acre preserve on Madeline Island, largest of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. The island's stands of hemlock, cedar and hardwoods are a breeding site for many warblers and a migratory rest stop for more northerly species.
