Stoughton's four historic districts and its many National Register buildings and homes offer fine examples of architectural styles significant to the area including Italianate, Renaissance, Revival, and Queen Anne. The East Side Historic District displays the overall architectural cohesiveness of several architectural influences. The Northwest Side Historic District was once the agricultural trading and industrial center. The Southwest Side Historic District is composed of mostly frame-constructed homes and includes the historic West Elementary School and the First Universalist Church, which now houses Stoughton's Historical Museum. Situated on State Hwy 51, the Main Street Historic District is a collection of Victorian and early twentieth century commercial buildings.
