Lac Vieux Desert Bicycle Tour
Ready for a roller coaster ride through the Northwoods? When you've gotten your legs in shape, there's nothing more exhilarating than flying over terrain like you'll find between Land O' Lakes and Phelps. This route is just one of hundreds of miles of recommended on-road and off-road routes shown on the new VAMBASA (Vilas Area Mountain Bike And Ski Association) map. The inexpensive map is available at information centers and businesses throughout the area. You'll find some flat ground on the out-and-back panhandle near Land O' Lakes. Otherwise, there are only two directions - up and down. Some rollers are short and steep, some long and steep, still more are moderate. South Shore Road dishes out the toughest terrain. A route full of bicycling excitement and beautiful scenery is a real find. The surroundings here are a delightful mix of tall maples, paper birch, balsam fir and black spruce; forest you only find in the Northwoods. Lovely views of North Twin Lake, Afterglow Lake and Maple Lake are highlights. You'll catch glimpses of Lac Vieux Desert (Lock-View-Dee-Zair) here and there through the trees along South Shore Road. For a closer look, you can take a short side trip on West Shore Road to the public campground and boat landing. Lac Vieux Desert is the headwaters of the Wisconsin River, which drops more than 1,000 feet over 375 miles before joining the Mississippi at Prairie du Chien.
