Newly-remodeled restaurant and bar. Serving mouthwatering breakfast all day. Delicious appetizers, salads, specialty sandwiches, hand-pattied burgers, prime rib, walleye and in-house smoked ribs and pulled pork. Happy hour daily. Back in 1968, Paul Heytens had a dream: Build a liquor store and bar in Superior that could attract folks from the Wisconsin side but also across the bridge in Duluth, where liquor sales were much more highly regulated and not available on Sundays. He found the right spot on a used car lot in the Billings Park neighborhood right off the Bong Bridge. "The banker said, 'Paul, I think you're nuts. But how much do you want?'" says Pat Heytens, Paul's son, who was a child at the time. "He knew Dad would get it done." That's how The Shack began. After several additions and remodelings, the legendary bar, liquor store and now the restaurant for which the complex is best known, stands on the same spot 45 years later. A lot has changed at The Shack, but the commitment to community and quality remains the same. Pat Heytens bought the company from his father in 1990 and ran it until he sold The Shack to Seth Oliver in 2005. "This is a special place," Oliver says. "We've updated it and brought new items to the menu. But we're honored to help keep The Shack an important part of our community where people go to have a great meal and great fun."
