Willow River State Park

  • Updated: 1/28/2015
  • Condition: Poor
  • Base: 1 -2
  • Groomed: Yes

Trails range from easy, such as the Purple Trail running along the Willow River, to the challenging Brown and Silver trails. Trails are groomed for both classical and skate skiing. All grooming is done by volunteer groomers who pride themselves in providing the best possible conditions. Conditions: The trails I skied were a wide variety of poor to gone. What is there is frozen compacted corn snow and ice is your classic track if any. All that was needed for most propulsion was arm poling on the Purple and on the flats across the river. Skiing the loose snow off to the side was better. It was 33 degrees and snow was starting to fall at 9:45pm. Its tough skiing at Willow right now. Use rock skis only and don't expect much. As of January 23th: The latest weather system brought 3-4" of light, fluffy snow to the forest. Groomers have been able to roll (pack) the trails, but at this point we don't have enough of a base to set tracks for classical skiers. Conditions are fair to marginal. Expect some debris on the trails. Note the Greenbush and Zillmer ski trails are now closed to hikers and pets, as grooming has begun. Snowshoers and hikers are welcome on any trail in the forest except the groomed ski trails. http://www.greenbushusa.com/trailReport.php

  • Condition: Poor

We finally have snow! The cold weather brought with it a nice layer of snow, so cross country skiiers and snowshoers are welcome to check out Janesville's parks, trails and greenbelts. Volunteers groom trails at Rockport Park and Riverside Golf Course as time allows after we have 6" of snow. Rockport Park offers Janesville's most extensive cross country skiing with over 6 miles of diverse trails, color coded for your enjoyment. Trails at Riverside Golf Course may be groomed as volunteers are available. Parking is available in the golf course parking lot with access to the trails on the west side of the building. Although these are the only groomed trails, cross-country skiing is allowed in any city park and our 500 acre greenbelt system. Cross country ski (and snowshoe) equipment is available for rent. Deposits are required and held until the equipment is returned on time and in acceptable condition. Reserve early as sizes are limited and are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Rock County Parks also offer cross country skiing options. Gibbs Lake and Carver-Roehl are suitable for beginner and intermediate skiiers, and Magnolia Bluff is best for experts. 1/26/2015 - Last week's warm temps took the snow we did have. But Mother Nature is turning us white again! as of 8:30am it is snowing here but only about 1.5" expected, so we wont be able to groom yet. Sat. Feb 7 from 6-8pm is our Candlelight Ski, Hike & Snowshoe. Join us at the park for a fun winter evening. The Friends will have a couple of roaring bonfires and hot beverages to enjoy. This winter we will be conducting a timber harvest through the area of the Hastings Trail. During the harvest and potentially throughout the cross-country ski season we will not be grooming this trail. We are sorry for the inconvenience for the winter use of this trail but this needed selective harvest will enhance the growth of our forest. If you have any questions please contact the park office. 2015 Wisconsin State Park Stickers and Trail Passes are on sale now! www.wiparks.net
