Red Cedar Trail and Hoffman Hills Recreation Area The warm weather will put a dampener on skiing. We recommend not skiing on the trails until we got colder weather. Any activity on the trails during the warm weather will just cause damage that will be hard for groomers to fix. If your looking for another alternative for outdoor recreation put on some snowshoes and walk on the snowshoes trails at these properties or enjoy some time on the nearby wildlife areas. A variety of waterfowl are piling into open water along the Red Cedar River. https://www.facebook.com/exploremenomonie/

Willow River State Park

  • Updated: 1/19/2017
  • Condition: Fair
  • Base: 2 -6
  • Groomed: Yes

Trails range from easy, such as the Purple Trail running along the Willow River, to the challenging Brown and Silver trails. Trails are groomed for both classical and skate skiing. All grooming is done by volunteer groomers who pride themselves in providing the best possible conditions. Conditions: It was a short trip on classic B skis from the boat launch up through the 300 campground and back. Departure was around 7:30 pm. Track varied from fast granular powder to ice. The textured skate deck was a mixture of loose powder to a crunchy conglomerate of ice and snow. The sun and warmth have worked on the trail since Jeff groomed it this morning. Let's start with skaters. Getting your edge should not be a problem. The deck has not had much use. It felt okay on the classic skis while on the deck. The classic track is solid on the bottom and several varieties of fast. Track depth varies. Pole tips did that work. How fast? On my low camber fish scale classic skis, I left the 300 for the boat launch down the gentle S turning hill, glide only. I bailed out of the track, too fast for comfort in the first turn. All that drag on the skate deck slowed things down enough to stop about 70 feet short of the boat launch turn around. That's at least twice the normal result of a glide down that run on those skis. If you plan to ski Willow while it's frozen, bring solid intermediate or better skills. It was wicked fast tonight. (As of 1/18/17) http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/willowriver/

Visit the winter wonderland at North Lakeland Discovery Center and check out our 12 miles of ski trails, snowshoe our Bog Boardwalk, and bring your ice skates for our new rink! (Updated 1/12/2017) WINMAN TRAIL REPORT ~ January 17, 2017 - SKI TRAILS - Groomed all the snowshoe trails and most of the ski trails this morning. What got groomed came out nice but wanted to get off the trail before it got too soft and started balling up. This is likely the last grooming until mid next week due to warm weather and forecasted rain this weekend. Ski early! (sorry, waiting for parts for the fat bike groomer so looking like Thursday at the earliest before bike trail will get groomed).........January 4, 2017 - FAT TIRE BIKE TRAILS - Groomed the fat bike trails today. With our new machine we were able to add Jump Line to the list and will be attempting to open more trails in the next few days. The trails that have been groomed all season are in great shape and fast. The trails that have just recently been opened may be a little soft and slow until they get groomed a few more times and get a chance to setup. Here’s the list of everything that’s currently being groomed: Yellow Trail, Cut Off, The Hub (complete), Jump Line, Green Trail, Roller Creek, Trial & Air and the Demo Trail (not on the map – starts behind the new chalet). www.manitowishwaters.org

Don't let the forecast fool you! Park conditions remain good amidst the warmer temps. We have a solid base with no concern of our snow disappearing. The best way to prepare for warmer conditions and possible rain is to accurately wax, or use your waxless skis. Please contact the Minocqua Winter Park for waxing tips or to set an appointment to have ski shop staff wax your skis (715.356.1099). We will groom throughout the night and tomorrow night to prepare for the weekend. Insider tip from Dan – tomorrow am. should be one of the best ski days of the year! www.minocquawinterpark.org

Machickanee Ski Trails - 1/14/17 Overall, it went pretty well. A lot of snow that fell off the trees made it a little rough in the pines. Quite a bit of pine needles and leaves down from the high winds earlier in the week. Its cold enough that the pine needles and leaves should not be a problem. A lot of sticks down. Please toss them off the trail while you are out there skiing. Blackberry Ramble and Brehmer Creek trails are tracked and should be OK. Coral Berry and Timber Wolf trails are not groomed and are closed for the time being due to logging operations that left those trails in a bit of a mess. The weather this weekend should be very nice for skiing. This may be your best chance to ski for a while as the temps are supposed to be around 40 degrees mid to late next week. Lakewood Cross Country Ski - Great trail conditions today, only the golf course loop was groomed for skate and classical, skate lane was nice and firm, just a few soft spots that were in the direct sunlight. Classical tracks looked very good as well, no bare ground showing through on either trail. Groomers did a great job of maintaining this section of trail from all of the bad weather that we have had, well worth the drive. http://www.lakewoodxcskiclub.com/

Nose Lake Ski Trail: Nose Lake was a hub of activity on 1/15 and 1/16, and the trail was well worn. Because of that it received new classic tracks on 1/16. The tracks were deep, and with the sub 32 temperatures tonight, they should firm up nicely for tomorrow. Washburn Lake Ski Trails: With the upcoming warmer temperatures Washburn was groomed 1/16. The rest of the week grooming will be dictated by precipitation and temperature. Just the skate deck was cleaned up 1/16, while the classic tracks were left alone. Northwood Golf Course: Classic tracks are good to very good. Mostly clean, firm and fast, just not as much depth as we'd like given the scarcity of snow. All trails groomed skate and classic. www.oneidacountywi.com/crosscountryandsnowshoeing.php

Daytime highs in the mid-30’s to low 40’s and partly sunny skies are forecast for the 3rd week of January with nighttime temperatures in the mid to upper 20’s. Expect softening bases. Trails currently reporting: Afterglow Lake Resort (1/14) – Excellent conditions exist. Firm, level, even, smooth, perfect skate lanes. Solid, firm, consistently full depth, perfect classic tracks. Ski trails groomed 27 times and Fat Bike trails groomed 15 times this season. Anvil (1/17) - Good conditions with 5" base. All trails / runs groomed. Please be patient with warmer temps we might not be grooming until we get below freezing weather. Warm weather is hard on equipment. Escanaba (1/19) – Good conditions with all loops tracked. Land O’Lakes Ski (1/12) – Conditions should be great for some time after the 10+ inches of snow on Tuesday and Wednesday. East Side has deep, well formed tracks. West side is dragged smooth and flat and will be tracked Friday morning after hopefully firming up tonight. Good skiing but no tracks. Madeline Lake (1/14) – Very good conditions with all loops tracked. Warming temperatures are softening the base making it difficult to make turns. All loops have been tracked. . Reminder of trail change for 2017 so check the warming building for new / rerouted trails. New maps will be available soon, until then pay attention to new intersection signs as a guide. This weekend, check out Wisconsin Winter from the Air, shop at Arftic Art for Animals, watch American K1 Kickboxing or visit the Winter Farmers Market. Cross country skiers and snowshoers are welcome to check out Janesville's parks, trails and greenbelts. Volunteers groom trails at Rockport Park and Riverside Golf Course as time allows after we have 6" of snow. Riverside has three groomed trails, about 1 mile each (one cross country, one skate skiing and a walking trail). Rockport Park offers Janesville's most extensive cross country skiing with over 6 miles of diverse trails, color coded for your enjoyment. Trails at Riverside Golf Course may be groomed as volunteers are available. Parking is available in the golf course parking lot with access to the trails on the west side of the building. Although these are the only groomed trails, cross-country skiing is allowed in any city park and our 500 acre greenbelt system. Cross country ski (and snowshoe) equipment is available for rent. Deposits are required and held until the equipment is returned on time and in acceptable condition. Reserve early as sizes are limited and are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Rock County Parks also offer cross country skiing options. Gibbs Lake and Carver-Roehl are suitable for beginner and intermediate skiers, and Magnolia Bluff is best for experts.
