It was easy to ski through the new snow and I had good glide on the firm skate deck below. As more skiers came out, the fresh snow became thicker and made skiing slower. But it was still great skiing! " Superior and Douglas County Municipal Trails: The Ski trails are scheduled for grooming and tracking on Friday, March 6, 2015. Willow River State Park

  • Updated: 2/23/2015
  • Condition: Good
  • Base: 2 -4
  • Groomed: Yes

Trails range from easy, such as the Purple Trail running along the Willow River, to the challenging Brown and Silver trails. Trails are groomed for both classical and skate skiing. All grooming is done by volunteer groomers who pride themselves in providing the best possible conditions. Conditions: Conditions are amazingly good! With the exception of the prairie areas of the Orange trail and the Red Prairie Loop, all trails have a good skate surface and generally solid track. A couple of the groomers headed out today to test out some new equipment. It turned out that the recent dusting of snow had accumulated to a point where we could actually groom. The entire trail system was groomed. Track was set everywhere except in some open prairie areas. The groomer did dig up some scattered bits of grass and dirt but these should be easily avoided. Trails are in poor condition. There is snow to ski on but there are also still a lot of bare spots due to all of the wind blowing the snow around. If you do utilize the trails, please use caution. 2/18/15 Take a winter tour through the Community Park on our 4.2 miles of classic style groomed cross-country ski trails. Broken down into 2 separate loops, the inner loop offers 1.1 miles while the outer loop boasts 3.1 miles. *Please use north park entrance off of County Rd Y, Oshkosh WI for parking. Cross County skiing is allowed on the WIOUWASH trail and Mascoutin Trail, which are both in fair condition for skiing. Please be cautious as these trails are also open for snowmobilers. Trails are sloppy but open. Cross country skiers and snowshoers are welcome to check out Janesville's parks, trails and greenbelts. Volunteers groom trails at Rockport Park and Riverside Golf Course as time allows after we have 6" of snow. Riverside has three groomed trails, about 1 mile each (one cross country, one skate skiing and a walking trail). Rockport Park offers Janesville's most extensive cross country skiing with over 6 miles of diverse trails, color coded for your enjoyment. Trails at Riverside Golf Course may be groomed as volunteers are available. Parking is available in the golf course parking lot with access to the trails on the west side of the building. Although these are the only groomed trails, cross-country skiing is allowed in any city park and our 500 acre greenbelt system. Cross country ski (and snowshoe) equipment is available for rent. Deposits are required and held until the equipment is returned on time and in acceptable condition. Reserve early as sizes are limited and are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Rock County Parks also offer cross country skiing options. Gibbs Lake and Carver-Roehl are suitable for beginner and intermediate skiiers, and Magnolia Bluff is best for experts. 2/13/2015 - Trails are snow covered and groomed but pretty thin. We are going to need more snow before we can groom again but the trails are still ski-able. Watch for bare spots and leaf litter in spots. This winter we will be conducting a timber harvest through the area of the Hastings Trail. During the harvest and potentially throughout the cross-country ski season we will not be grooming this trail. We are sorry for the inconvenience for the winter use of this trail but this needed selective harvest will enhance the growth of our forest. If you have any questions please contact the park office. 2015 Wisconsin State Park Stickers and Trail Passes are on sale now! www.wiparks.net
