Willow River State Park

  • Updated: 3/20/2015
  • Condition: Closed
  • Base: 1 -1
  • Groomed: Yes

Trails range from easy, such as the Purple Trail running along the Willow River, to the challenging Brown and Silver trails. Trails are groomed for both classical and skate skiing. All grooming is done by volunteer groomers who pride themselves in providing the best possible conditions. Conditions: Melting down. There is a skate deck and variable classic track. I skied classic from the boat launch out the Purple and back up around the 300 campground. Its over with. The trail was glazed to gone in the sun or crunching underneath. Pine cones, oak leaves, and other tree litter is down. I found one decent stretch of classic track in the 300 loop. If you come off the Green from the boat launch, go right. Willow's base is so thin it will not survive the coming warmth. Ski trail signs will be coming down today. I saw more hikers today than skiers. DISCOVERY CENTER TRAILS - Grooming Update - Date: Monday, March 163, 2015 Trail Conditions: CLOSED We lost most of the snow at Discovery Center this past weekend, and spring rains are here. Thanks for a great season! Posted by North Lakeland Discovery Center NORTH LAKELAND TRAILS – Grooming Update – 3/9/15 The XC ski trails and XC ski practice field, at the school, were all groomed today. All of our areas remain in excellent condition! As we start entering this Spring weather pattern, temperatures will affect our ability to groom. Enjoy our trails, while you can. As a reminder, there is NO WALKING on our groomed trails! We hope everyone enjoys the trails, and the skiing they bring to the area. We ask everyone to observe our rules, to ensure skiing enjoyment. Please, do not walk on groomed and tracked trails, and please, no dogs! This past weekend, there was considerable trail damage from hikers/walkers who chose not to follow our trail signage and policy. Unfortunately, our XC skiers, for whom the trails were designed, had unfortunate conditions to ski on. The North Lakeland trail system continues to be groomed and maintained by the North Lakeland School. Donations are appreciated. WINMAN TRAILS - Grooming update for 3/16/2015: Spring rains are here. There is a snow mix on the trails, but lots of bare spots opening up. At this point it’s looking like Spring is here. Thanks for a great season! Old Man Winter had a little surprise for us, but it's all over now. Hope to see you next year! Cross country skiers and snowshoers are welcome to check out Janesville's parks, trails and greenbelts. Volunteers groom trails at Rockport Park and Riverside Golf Course as time allows after we have 6" of snow. Riverside has three groomed trails, about 1 mile each (one cross country, one skate skiing and a walking trail). Rockport Park offers Janesville's most extensive cross country skiing with over 6 miles of diverse trails, color coded for your enjoyment. Trails at Riverside Golf Course may be groomed as volunteers are available. Parking is available in the golf course parking lot with access to the trails on the west side of the building. Although these are the only groomed trails, cross-country skiing is allowed in any city park and our 500 acre greenbelt system. Cross country ski (and snowshoe) equipment is available for rent. Deposits are required and held until the equipment is returned on time and in acceptable condition. Reserve early as sizes are limited and are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Rock County Parks also offer cross country skiing options. Gibbs Lake and Carver-Roehl are suitable for beginner and intermediate skiiers, and Magnolia Bluff is best for experts. Contact Rock County at 608-757-5450. www.ci.janesville.wi.us/index.aspx?page=218

Thank you to all of our skiers who came out to the park this year and enjoyed the snow that we had! Let's hope for more next year. Starting next winter (2015-16), Mirror Lake State Park will begin requiring a State Trail Pass for our cross-country ski trails. This is the same pass that can be used at Blue Mound, Lapham Peak and many other state trails, which many skiers already have.
