Bayfield County

  • Updated: 1/20/2017
  • Condition: Fair
  • Base: 6 -12
  • Groomed: No

Trail Conditions: Variable/Good to Poor Snow Cover: 6-12" Date of Report: January 20, 2017 Area Report: As of Thursday all grooming in Bayfield County has been suspended due to weather conditions. Expect varying trail conditions ranging generally from good to fair. With the current warm up and extended weather forecast use caution for exposed rocks, wet areas and icy conditions as trails could deteriorate quickly in a short amount of time. Northern Bayfield County is still holding onto some of the snow pack. Trails out of Herbster were groomed Thursday (1/19/17) and were in good condition. Trails in the Port Wing area are in fair to good condition with some exceptions. Trail 1 just east of Port Wing will be reopened Thursday. Riders are cautioned to be aware of logging operations on parts of the trail along with LOGGING DEBRIS! Please use extreme caution. In the very Northwest corner of the County, Trail 1 from Brule to highway 13 is in fair condition, it was last groomed on Monday. The road running from there to Port Wing might be getting a little rough. Trails in the Valhalla area are still in good shape. There is still a good base and trails are holding up pretty well. With the warm temps and forecasted rain, it’s hard to know how the trails will be over the weekend. The trail to the casino is open. Southern Bayfield County Namakagon has had some warm weather and sun the last few days, with warm temperatures and less sun forecasted through this coming weekend. Groomers were able to get out to some trails earlier this week but any future operations are going to be put on hold until temperatures and our base changes. Time will tell as to our next time grooming (maybe yet this week, maybe not). We can only work with what the weather allows. Thank in advance to all the riders for taking it easy with the warm weather. Drummond: All trails were groomed in the Drummond area earlier this week and are okay, even made it thru the Bibon swamp to Mason. We did not go to Sanborn as those trails had questionable snow cover last week in the fields. With the warm weather trails have not set so will not last long. Trails connecting to plowed roads are in poor condition due to bare surfaces. Grooming has been suspended for all trails until conditions improve with colder temps and more snow. Riders are urged to stay on trails and not deviate on to private property. Barnes: Our grooming operations have also been suspended until our weather conditions change. Our trails too are deteriorating fast, if riding use caution. Always remember to stay on designated snowmobile routes and trails. News and Reports: New snowmobile maps have arrived! Order yours online at www.travelbayfieldcounty.com or pick one up at area businesses. You can also download the Avenza app (for free) and get the updated Snowmobile Map on your device before you hit the trails – you can locate yourself on the trail map with GPS so you can see where you are, even with no cell reception! If you'd like to see the sponsor businesses on the same type of map, try the Trail Treker app ($1.99); the map is a free download with the code "Washburn2017." http://bit.ly/2hWvMLL

Trail report for January 23, 2017-Trails are poor. With the temps in the mid 30’s to the mid 40’s and the on and off rain this past weekend the trails have really degraded. The corners and around town have bare spots with slush and puddles. We are down to our base and that is starting to get soft. The logging areas are very bare. Out in the woods it’s not too bad but our groomers can’t get out with these warm temps to do any good. We do have a snow storm system coming in late Tuesday and Wednesday with 3” to 5” of snow and then some colder temps expected. If this happens we will be out grooming. We need snow and cold weather!!! Please be careful out there! Remember be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride. The 7 day forecast looks a little too warm but we will keep our fingers crossed that the snow will hold Good News: The Land O Lakes trails are still good. Some snow is forecast for next several days so lets hope it happens and trails improve. Bad News: Trails by roads or towns are brown and will not take much traffic. Weather is still calling for temps in the upper 30’s for the next couple of days. Grin and Bear it and hope for the best. We do have a couple of reroutes west of town. You can no longer enter the Black Oak from the trail behind the bar. You have to continue to Carlson road and hang a right. Follow the signs. We now have to run Big Portage Lake Rd for a mile as a landowner closed their property. PLEASE obey the posted speed limits as it will be radar enforced. I would call our trails fair/ poor. This is from a family and the wife talking, so Guys, put on your "big boy pants" and suck it up. The rain has stopped, yes there are some bare spots, but we still have snow. ALL KIDDING ASIDE, lets hope we get some cooler weather soon and some more snow.... 'Cuz I Wanna ride! Our next club function is Sun Feb 5th Breakfast at the Pea Patch 8am-noon and drawing for Guns and Roses! tickets available at area businesses. 1/23/17: Our report has not changed since 1/20/2017 BUT.... we are forecast to get some snow Tuesday & Wednesday of this week. The reports will be updated when we see what the weather actually brings us. We are hoping for more snow and colder temps, of course! So far the base is holding up amazingly well, at least in the northern part of the county. With a little new snow, we'll be ready to go! MARINETTE COUNTY SNOWMOBILE ALLIANCE UPDATED TRAIL REPORT POSTED ON JANUARY 19 & 20 2017: Most of the County trails remain open at this time, but with the warm temps, conditions are not ideal. We are hoping to preserve the base we have. We do update the reports as they come in. To contact a club directly with questions about their areas, please go to marinettecosnowtrails.com. There are links to each club right on the Home Page. JANUARY 19, 2017 UPDATE! DUN-GOOD RIDERS: Because of warm & rainy conditions, the Dun-Good Riders trail system has taken a hit. Still plenty of snow but conditions are not ideal. Trails were groomed early in the week but conditions have caused trails to become soft and mushy. Warm conditions are predicted to continue into next week. January 19, 2017 UPDATE! RANGER CITY RIDERS: RCR trails are in pretty good shape yet; however, with these temperatures getting warmer each day, I feel if there's a lot of hard riding (diehard riders) these trails may not last very long. People could re-strain from riding for a few days until the temperatures cool back down. Then maybe these trails will last us a few weeks longer but if people must ride keep, in mind with temperatures where they're at and no snow in the future, we could be done sooner than you think. JANUARY 19, 2017 UPDATE! NEAR NORTH TRAIL RIDERS OF ATHELSTANE: The guys are now out today grooming the Near North Trails. Yesterday they did some major work on the East Trail so now it is in much better shape to be used once again. Of course we do need some snow. Don't care for these warm temperatures but I guess my grandfather would call it the January thaw!!! Hopefully better snow days are in the future. JANUARY 19, 2017 UPDATE! PEMENEE RIVER RIDERS: Trails are still in good condition and we have been grooming. Trail conditions will deteriorate if we get warm temps and lots of sun or rain. We have to see what the weather brings us. JANUARY 19, 2017 UPDATE! RIVER ROAD RIDERS: RRR trails are in poor condition. Warm weather is keeping the groomer off the trails. Riding is NOT recommended. Warm weather/rain is predicted thru the weekend and into next week so riding conditions will only get worse……will update when weather turns back to winter. JANUARY 19, 2017 UPDATE! KUMALONG SNO-RIDERS (Coleman area) Trails are CLOSED until further notice JANUARY 20, 2017 UPDATE! Our trails are open and it's amazing how well they are holding up considering the warm temps. Sky's have been mostly cloudy and that's helping. Trails are soft but very ride able. The atv-utv trails SOUTH of CTY RD C are CLOSED! . www.therealnorth.com

Cross Country Cruisers Trail Report from Trail Boss Steve Wolfe 1/19/17 Be aware of rapidly changing conditions. Well mother nature is certainly taking us for a roller coaster this past two weeks. Last week with beautiful snow and this week with above normal temperatures eating away at our beautiful snow cover. I do not have much good to say here so I am telling you what it is. The warm temps and sunshine are deteriorating our trails. The rest of the week and weekend are supposed to be above freezing and possible rain and snow mix. We will be discontinuing our grooming operations as of today until the temperatures cool down some. The trails close to town are the ones taking the worst hit near all the road crossings were the sand and salt gets tracked up on the trails. Most everything in the woods is holding up fairly well. Next week looks to cool down some and there is a very stormy weather pattern approaching with chances of snow in it. Let's all hope this warm weather comes to an end soon and we can get back out and enjoy our rides. As always RIDE RIGHT RIDE SAFE!! Steve Wolfe www.minocqua.org

Townsend - Red Arrow Snowmobile - ATV Club - It’s 41 degrees as I type this report for you and the trails are turning to mush. The forecast is for temps in the upper 30’s into the 40’s for the next 7 days with the possibility of some rain or freezing rain later in the week. Riding on the trails now will only destroy our wonderful base that’s been established over the last couple of snow storms! Rule of thumb again is: If your yard is sloppy and mushy, the trails will be too!! We won’t be able to groom until the temps settle down once more. Lakewood - Paul Bunyan Snowmobile Club - The Lakewood trails as well as all other area trails are very soft and slushy. We are asking riders to please stay of the trails until the temperatures drop below freezing. We will be in the upper 30's into the 40's for the weekend. I know this is the last thing you wanted to hear after a great weekend of riding last weekend. We will not be grooming until further notice. Bagley and Brazeau - Joyriders Trails -We will be CLOSING the trails Wednesday 1/18/2017 7:00AM. We are trying to save the trails and get colder weather to open them back up. Gillett Sno ATV Riders - Gillett Trails remain open with good to excellent riding conditions. We are out grooming several times a week. Just a reminder the Gillett Shell Station to the Chuck Wagon is closed. There is a marked trail along Highway 32 to get to the Wildfire Hotel and Bar that is it. Please stay on marked trails. Chute Pond Snowmobile Club - Chute Pond trails are open, but riding is discouraged at this time. With forecasted temperatures approaching 40 with possible rain, we are asking that you use common sense- and stay off the trails until the temperatures drop back down. We believe the trails will withstand this January thaw- your cooperation will help make this happen. Oconto Falls - Sno Jokers Trails - Trails are CLOSED. Lena Snow Drifters - Trails are CLOSED. Chase Sno-Chasers - Trails are CLOSED. www.ocontocounty.org

UPDATED: 2:00 pm, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18th, 2017 Club members understand the delicate relationship between private landowners and our trail system… we have had many complaints already this year of snowmobilers riding off the marked trail… with some landowners indicating they will not allow the trail to cross their property if we can’t keep our riders on the trail. PLEASE, respect these people who are gracious enough to allow us to cross their property by STAYING ON THE MARKED TRAIL at all times. Several days of warm temperatures ahead have prompted zone managers to close their trails to preserve the excellent base that is now in place. Groomers will continue working the trails this week to flatten them out so they re-freeze nice and smooth when temperatures drop again. All trails are closed. Nothing but lots of rain and temps above freezing in our area the last two weeks. Please continue to monitor the snowmobile trail hotline for updates (414) 299-0330. Please stay off the trails and respect our landowners when trails are not open. When trails are open, we also ask that you slow down in the residential areas, as some concerns from landowners along the trails have been expressed. Be advised that at least 6 inches of snow and temperatures below 32 degrees are needed before trails can be considered to be open. If temps are 32 or higher, trails are closed. We encourage you to go to the Waukesha County Snowmobile Association website www.waukeshasnow.org for information on joining one of the 17 clubs in Waukesha County. Please remember to stay on the Marked Trails and Ride Safe! If you are interested in a trail map, contact Holly Glainyk (262) 896-8074 or hglainyk@waukeshacounty.gov. www.waukeshasnow.org
