Ashland County

  • Updated: 3/2/2015
  • Condition: Good-Partially Open
  • Base: 3 -15
  • Groomed: Yes

The snowmobile trails throughout the county are PARTIALLY OPEN, groomed and in very good condition. Trail 13 south from Ashland to Marengo is now OPEN and has been completely groomed. However, the portion of Trail 9 from Ashland south to Marengo remains CLOSED and gated due to lack of snow cover. Once that area receives adequate snowfall, the trail will reopen. Riders wishing to travel west to Bayfield County may do so by taking Trail 9 north out of Clam Lake toward Old Baldy (aka St. Peter’s Dome). Then take Trail 90 west into Bayfield County. The trails in the southern part of Ashland County, near Mellen, Glidden and Butternut, are currently in very good condition as that area has received a higher amount of snow. The Tri-County Corridor, a 62-mile stretch of abandoned railroad right-of-way running from Ashland to Superior, is always OPEN. It was last groomed on Feb. 27. The corridor is in good shape with a nice, smooth surface for riding, according to Bill Chandler, president of the Ashland County Snowmobile Alliance. Please check our website, www.visitashland.com, for detailed trail reports or call the Snowmobile Report hotline at 1-800-284-9484. (NOTE: If you call before 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, you will reach one of our Chamber staff members who can give you the snowmobile report. If you call after 5 or on the weekends, you will hear the snowmobile hotline recording.) Burnett County

  • Updated: 2/26/2015
  • Condition: Poor-Partially Open
  • Base: 1 -5
  • Groomed: Yes

MOST of the Burnett County Snow Trails will OPEN on Friday, February 27. Trail 45 is closed south of Trail 120; and all trails south of Hwy 70 will remain closed with the exception of the Gandy Dancer Trail. In cooperation with the Burnett County Snow Trails Association, the decision has been made to open these trails. At this time, trails are in poor to fair condition, with some bare spots in the open areas. Groomers are trying to work with the small amounts of snow that we have received in the last couple weeks on what trails they can. Please use caution on our trails as you may encounter logging activity. Snowmobiles, ATVs and UTVs must be registered or licensed in order to ride. Some township ordinances allow for ATV/UTV use of the town roads and others do NOT allow it. It is the rider's responsibility to contact the township in which you plan to ride in and get the current rules pertaining to ATVs/UTVs and the town roads. Please see contact information on our website. NO OFF-TRAIL USE IS ALLOWED. You may ride your ATV/UTV on the Gandy Dancer Trail from Tewalt Road, (which is just south of Siren), and continue north in Burnett County during this time of year. The above information is only for the state-funded trails. For information on the unfunded club trails, please go to our website under "Snowmobile Trails" for links to club information. It is your responsibility to know where you are and whose property you are on. If you are unsure of where Burnett County Forest Land is located, please refer to a Burnett County Plat Book, or you may check our website under "Maps/GIS". Please be careful, be respectful to other trail users, and ride safely. Be sure to check back here for trail updates. www.burnettcounty.com/index.aspx?NID=139

Be aware when riding as trails are only in fair condition- poor in some areas-- with limited snowcover in spots.  Also, particularly rough are trails across ag fields that had been plowed in the fall, and reports indicate trails through the Blue Hills (Trail #133) are also in poor condition. Riders should be aware as they may come across some reroutes and trail closures. Trail 31 North out of Bruce is closed. Riders should go West towards Weyerhaeuser, and then North from Weyerhaeuser to get to the Blue Hills area. www.ruskcountywi.com/snowmobile/

After another busy weekend the trails are in good condition. Watch out for some rough spots throughout the trail system, there are some pretty large holes that have developed due to lack of snow, so travel with caution don't override your field of vision. Snow is predicted for later this week, that should help us fill some of the rough spots. Warmer temps are also in the long range forecast so don't wait for that last ride too long or mother nature may melt the trails away. Coming from the east it is after you cross the Wisconsin River Bridge. It will be marked but there will be logging equipment in there. Rode through there yesterday & it is indeed marked well. Please slow down as you ride through there. There is logging in a few other areas as well. Eagle Lake Trail & Catfish Lake Loop are marked & OPEN. Stay by the barrels. It's the last week of February and I can honestly say we're looking at the BEST TRAIL CONDITIONS of the season. With over 6 inches of snow last week, subzero temps and nightly grooming, all trails are VERY GOOD plus 14 and lesser used trails are EXCELLENT! Continued below normal temperatures, more snow in the forecast and reduced trail traffic... these are the conditions that bring out "the locals"! In a few words... "this could be as good as it gets!" If you're thinking about coming north... "it's time to act!" When you ride, REMEMBER “ride right”, stay on trail, and if you’re not familiar with the lake... don't go! Three Lakes Trails are still in very good condition. With the colder temps that we have had lately, they have been flat and hard. A few icy corners, and a few dirt spots. Roads are starting to take a hit, and with the warmer temps in the forecast they might get worse. There is snow in the forecast for Tuesday. We are in the 3-6″ range. We need that. We are in to March now, and it is up to Mother Nature on how she acts and how our trail conditions hold up. There is warmer temps in the forecast. Your best bet is to make plans today to come and ride this weekend.. WE are still grooming on a regular basis. A big shout goes out to the group of guys that put in over 100 hours last week fixing one of our groomers. There were some late night and early mornings. Lakes are all marked and safe, please stay close to the barrels. Clubs are ready - mother nature is not. Lack of snow is keeping the trails closed - with no major snow in the forecast. Right now anything facing the sunshine is bare ground and with the sun getting higher in the sky every day, it does not look good for the rest of the year. If we get a major storm, follow the hotline for opening and closings. Several trails have been moved - most notably the one in and out of Big Green Lake. Make sure to follow trail markers because the quickest way to get a trail closed is by riding out of the markers. Now all we need is more snow. Support your local club by becoming a member, donate a few hours over the year by helping with trails and fundraisers. And if you can't do that, please buy a few extra raffle tickets, stop at the brat fry's, or donate directly to the groomer funds each club has. Thank you - see you in 2015 Trail passes can now be purchased at Fox River Travel - BP Station in Princeton. USE THE HOTLINE BEFORE RIDING TO MAKE SURE TRAILS ARE OPEN - recorded message at 920-294-3220 TRESPASSING HAS BECOME A PROBLEM - Please stay on the trails - While you may not think you are causing any problems - riding outside the marked trails will only destroy club and landowner relations . When landowners get upset they say NO TRAIL THROUGH HERE ANYMORE! And then where will you ride? So use your head and stay on the trails. Please join a club to help support the great trail system these clubs provide. PLEASE -STAY ON TRAILS - NO TRESPASSING greenlakecountysnowmobiletrails.com

Colder temperatures have helped maintain the snow base on our open trails in the western half of the county. Despite less than anticipated snowfall, open zones are providing some fairly decent riding. The forecast calls for another chance of snow later in the week. All the trails in Shawano County are made possible by the volunteer efforts of the members of 18 different clubs. Members work throughout the year with landowners, the DNR and State associations to be sure we all have trails to ride when the snow flies. Are you a club member? If not, consider joining your local club and learning just how vulnerable our trails are when clubs experience a lack of help or riders who disrespect landowners' property.
