After a short warm spell the trails were left with a 2 inch base, last night we received roughly 1 ½ inches of new snow. Today’s temperatures are stabilizing in the low 30’s with 3 to 5 inches of snow predicted to fall tonight. Clear skies and temps in the 20’s are predicted through the 10 day forecast with another 3 inches of snow possible on Friday. Lake Owen and Lake Namakagon stick trails are marked as of this afternoon. Trail groomers are just as antsy to get out and groom the trails but will need a good 12 inch base before their equipment can safely operate. As the new snow accumulates we will update these reports. www.cable4fun.com

Its the most wonderful time of the year, SNOWMOBILE season! White Thunder Riders are reporting most trails to be in VERY good condition. We have received some fresh snow and come Friday the trails will be calling your name. Please remember WINTER ATV/UTV TRAILS Any snowmobile trails posted with both ATV and Snowmobile signs are open to ATVs/UTVs in the winter. Please compare your Iron County ATV map to your snowmobile map and make a note of those trails. Also, ATV/UTV trail riding is allowed only as long as the average daily temperature is less than 30 degrees, due to the fact that they have the potential to do much greater damage to the trails during warming conditions. www.hurleywi.com

Sawyer County Visitors & Convention Bureau

  • Updated: 12/22/2014
  • Condition: Poor
  • Base: 2 -4
  • Groomed: No

All Sawyer County Trails are officially open! However, their condition is poor as we need to build up our base again, but the good news is we're moving in the right direction with the couple of inches of fresh snow we received in the last 2 days and the cold has returned to makes things solid again. Also good news is the Christmas forecast looks to be bringing us our Christmas wish of heavy snow! Sunday it rained in central part of Wisconsin, but Hayward Area was lucky and received 2 inches of wet snow. Again, the cool temps are great for freezing our lakes and wetlands and our crews have been busy staking lakes. The following lakes have a good 12 inches or more of ice; Lost Land Lake, Tiger Cat Flowage, Round Lake, Little Round, Nelson, Ospry, Grindstone, Whitefish, Sand Lake and LCO. Several more lakes are scheduled to be staked soon and we will update as soon as those are completed. Remember to always use caution on the lakes and stay on the marked trails. Some lakes have ice heaves on them. As many know September 4th brought quite a storm to our area and many trees were lost. Crews of volunteers have been working hard on cleaning up debris and down trees but have had some obstacles and delays accessing heavy damage due to soft trails. Please note the following trails that do have trees down; Trail #5 North of highway 70 to Wolfs Eagle Lodge, Trail #18 and #12 North of highway B to Trap and Fish and Trail #6 north of Polish Road to Dam Road. As mentioned the cold has returned and made things solid again and the crews are working hard to clear those trails. More updates to come. And a big thanks to the clubs and volunteers for their hard work so we can enjoy the beautiful trails! They are always looking for more help and volunteers, any questions about how to help and where to sign up give us a call! Don't forget ATV trails are also open and great for riding! www.haywardlakes.com

As is typical for this time of year, certain trail segments can be opened and others are not ready yet due to wetland crossings and/or have restrictions due to private land easements. It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to use their property... please review the information below carefully before trail riding and confirm that you are using open trails. Please note that on certain trails only segments of that trail may be open at this time. We anticipate frequent updates as the clubs report in with trails they have checked. In all areas where the winter recreational trails are closed the clubs are actively working on the getting the trails open. • Condition: Good

  • Groomed: Yes

Merry Christmas to all, the Boulder trail system is in very good condition. We have had snow the past couple of days and the trails are flat and smooth. Cold weather is predicted for the weekend and that should help keep the trails in good shape. We will take a couple of nights off of grooming, but will be back at it on Friday. The trail leaving town to the south and east, 15s-8e has been re-routed straight east of town, we no longer go behind the Lions Pavilion. It is well marked and should not be a problem. Trail 8w between trail 2 and North Creek Road has been logged and the loggers plowed it so it will be rough there until we get more snow. Also be aware of green electrical boxes near some of the trails, they buried all the wires here and some of the boxes are close to our trails. Think Snow! Just in time for the holidays!! We received a total of 6 inches of heavy snow the last three days. The groomer was out yesterday and hit all the Lac du Flambeau trails. Most of the trails are now in good shape for this time of year. Sections between Hwy H and Hwy 47 and East Boundry trail road and trail 51 have swampy areas and have not frozen enough to support the groomer so these areas will be bumpy. The groomer will be out again on Friday night. With all the cold weather the lakes have frozen over and are building up ice but are not safe to ride on. Please remember do not ride on lakes until they are marked. Slow down and ride safe. Check out the LDF webcam for the latest snow depths. Snow last week and again last night has helped revitalize our trail system. Trails are open and trail grooming is on a regular schedule. Our trails are mostly GOOD with the exception of wet areas. Warm conditions and lack of deep frost has kept the groomer out of a few short sections. REMEMBER... expect early trail conditions. Some area lakes still have open water! If it's not marked... stay off! When you ride proceed with caution, expect some ruts, bumps, and ice! The Presque Isle/Winchester Club will have grooming equipment on the trails (conditions permitting) both during daylight and night so expect a possible encounter. The weather forecast shows temperatures turning colder after CHRISTMAS and JOHN DEE. COM 5-10 DAY Snow forecast is very promising. Stay Tuned for Updates and “Think Snow”. www.presqueislewi.org/

Clubs are busy getting trails marked. NO TRAILS WILL OPEN until the clubs have them ready regardless of snow on the ground. Landowners need to finish harvesting crops and hunting season to end before the work can be completed. Support your local club by becoming a member, donate a few hours over the year by helping with trails and fundraisers. And if you can't do that, please buy a few extra raffle tickets, stop at the brat fry's, or donate directly to the groomer funds each club has. Thank you - see you in 2015 Trail passes can now be purchased at Fox River Travel - BP Station in Princeton. USE THE HOTLINE BEFORE RIDING TO MAKE SURE TRAILS ARE OPEN - recorded message at 920-294-3220 TRESPASSING HAS BECOME A PROBLEM - Please stay on the trails - While you may not think you are causing any problems - riding outside the marked trails will only destroy club and landowner relations . When landowners get upset they say NO TRAIL THROUGH HERE ANYMORE! And then where will you ride? So use your head and stay on the trails. Please join a club to help support the great trail system these clubs provide. PLEASE -STAY ON TRAILS - NO TRESPASSING greenlakecountysnowmobiletrails.com
