Onalaska graces the eastern shore of Lake Onalaska, a 7,700-acre pool of the Mississippi River. Here you’ll find ice fishing and snowmobiling in the winter and golfing and more fishing in the summer. The city is the trailhead for the Great River State Trail which connects to the La Crosse River, Elroy-Sparta, and “400” State Trails to produce 101 miles of non-stop hiking, biking, and snowmobiling adventure.
Don't leave without tasting...
Sweet Chili Shrimp appetizers from Season's by the Lake, a plate of authentic Mexican seafood at Manny's Mexican Cocina, a decadent chocolate dessert at Traditions, or enjoy your morning omelet at the Blue Moon with a breathtaking view of Lake Onalaska.
Top photo opportunities are...
- Sunny the Sunfish overlooking breathtaking Lake Onalaska. Grab your binoculars too - those may be white pelicans out on the water or eagles in the treetops.
- On top of Green Coulee. It's the highest point in the Coulee Region.
- Lytle's landing where the bike trail crosses the Black River on a 287 foot railroad trestle.
- The McGilvray Bridges are for walking only nowadays, and the beautiful truss bridges are a historic treasure.
Only have one day to play here?
Kevin at the Blue Heron will set you up with a bike rental. Pedal along the Great River Trail, stopping at the Upper Mississippi Fish and Wildlife Visitor Center before continuing on to the Black River at Lytle's Landing. After returning your bike, head a few blocks north to take in the view of Lake Onalaska and get your photo taken with Sunny the Sunfish. Pick from over 40 restaurants then choose to continue your outdoor experience canoeing on the Mississippi backwaters (Schafer's has boat rentals) or do a little shopping in the largest shopping district in nine counties.
Classic scenic drive.
Onalaska is nestled between the bluffs and the mighty Mississippi River on the Great River Road, voted "the prettiest drive in America" by the Huffington Post. The Great River Road is a favorite for families, motorcyclists, and anyone who enjoys the freedom of the open road.
Fishing? You’ll catch the big one if you...
Contact Anthony at Coulee Region Adventures. He can show you the hot spots on our 7,700 acre Lake Onalaska. Catch a variety of panfish or go for that trophy bass, pike, or catfish. Whether you enjoy setting a tip-up on the ice or casting off the side of a pontoon on a summer day, Lake Onalaska has great fishing any time of the year.
