Since the day of its dedication in 1901, St. Josaphat Basilica has been perhaps the grandest church in Wisconsin. It is the state's only Basilica, an honor reserved by the Catholic Church for its most beautiful structures. In 1990, the exterior of this landmark church was restored. This 1887 restored and furnished lumber baron's home is an extraordinary combination of carved woodwork, crystal chandeliers, ceiling and wall artistry, stained glass windows and five unique fireplaces. This is one of the most unusual historic homes in Wisconsin.
The Museum's permanent collection includes nearly 20,000 works from ancient objects to art of the present. Primary strengths are 19th- and 20th-century American and European works, contemporary art, American decorative arts, American and European folk art, and an outstanding Haitian art collection.
