Frequently Asked Questions

How did the participants earn their Travel Green Wisconsin certification?

To earn certification, applicants work their way through the TGW application.  The first step is determining your Baseline Environmental Performance Assessment.  The baseline collects information about the amount of energy, fuel, water, and solid waste that the business consumed during the last calendar year.  Most of this information can be found by contacting your local utility company.  Next, applicants commit to sustainable business practices found within the TGW application.  A minimum of 30 points are required, 5 points must be earned in the Communicaiton & Education section.

These practices include:

  • Communication and Education (Customers, Employees, Public)
  • Waste Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling
  • Energy Efficiency, Conservation, and Management
  • Water Conservation and Wastewater Management
  • Air Quality
  • Wildlife and Landscape Conservation and Management
  • Transportation
  • Purchasing
  • Local Community Benefits

Applicants submit an annual fee to participate in the program, an annual renewal is required to remain TGW certified.

Are there any required practices to earn certification?

To create a program comprehensive enough to be relevant across the diverse tourism industry, we decided to allow participants to be “ecopreneurial” and adopt the practices that make the most sense for their operation. Applicants are required to reach a minimum of 30 cumulative points to earn Travel Green Wisconsin certification, five (5) or more of those points need to be achieved in the “Communication and Education” section.
