As the snow melts and wildflowers bloom, a romantic cabin is a perfect setting for a refreshing getaway made for two. Grab your sweetheart and escape to one of these five idyllic cabins, all of which are tucked away from the crowds and inspire quality connection. While you may be tempted to nest inside during your getaway, these cabins also offer easy access to restaurants and recreational opportunities galore.
Balsam Ridge – Mercer
The two cabins at Balsam Ridge are snugged into a hardwood forest and feature a log interior, loft and Northwoods décor. Tuck inside for your visit or take advantage of all the activities the area has to offer.
Your lodging comes with a private dock on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage; on-site boat rentals are available. If there’s still snow, enjoy snowmobiling around the area. Or rent a side-by-side UTV from nearby Eagle All Sports for offroad trail adventure. A short drive around the area brings you to great dining, mini golf, a wildlife park, waterski shows, skiing, tubing, hiking and more.
The luxe Sandhill cabin is a three-level, 2,000-square-foot abode set on 350 secluded acres north of Sheboygan. Part of the Destination Kohler group of properties, Sandhill offers sweeping views of the prairie and pine woods outside.
Hike, bike, and even do some spring birdwatching on the property. But maybe you'll want to relax on the wraparound porch instead. Or take a sauna in the sauna "shack," which is equipped with a fireplace and full bathroom. No matter what you choose to do, you'll do it in style.
Kickapoo Valley Ranch Guest Cabins – La Farge
The soft, decadent cookies awaiting your arrival are the first plus. This second is your stylishly appointed cabin. All eight at Kickapoo Valley Ranch feature comfy beds with handmade quilts, braided rugs, and honey-toned wood on the walls and floor.
Out back, Adirondack rockers on the porch beg you to sit a spell and enjoy the beautiful Ocooch Mountains in the distance. Invigorate your body and soul during the day by exploring the 8,600-acre Kickapoo Valley Reserve next door, where you can enjoy activities such as horseback riding, hiking, biking and trout fishing.
Amherst Riverdance – Amherst
The minute you step inside this artsy cabin near Stevens Point, its unique spiral staircase will catch your eye. The wooden structure incorporates lumber from a nearby furniture factory, has an ironwood tree "growing" in its center and leads to a cozy loft.
If you're tempted to hide away here during your stay, you'll find an assortment of games and videos inside. But it's worth venturing out the front door to drink in the natural sights and sounds of the property, which hosts a section of the burbling Tomorrow River. If you do want to be out and about, you're in luck: you can canoe, swim, bike, fish and more all right here.
Frank Lloyd Wright's final Wisconsin project, this 880-square-foot getaway perches atop a wooded hill towering over Mirror Lake. Snuggle around the stone fireplace in chairs designed by Wright, or enjoy a glass of wine on the brick deck facing the lake.
During the day, make use of the cottage's canoe and dock. Or, since the property is part of Mirror Lake State Park, you may wish to hike, fish or swim instead. The cottage is just minutes away from the seasonally-operated Ishnala Supper Club, one of Wisconsin's most storied fine-dining spots.
