Dig Into Gluten Free Fare in Spring Green
As the demand for gluten-free dining continues to soar, Spring Green has emerged as a haven for those seeking wheat-free culinary adventures. From delicious sandwiches to delectable desserts and much more, here are a few must-tries during your next visit to the area.
Wisconsin Riverside Resort
There are few things you can’t do at the Wisconsin Riverside Resort. Camp with friends and family, rent a canoe, tube or kayak to relax on the dazzling Wisconsin River, and complete your stay with a gluten-free meal at the on-site restaurant.
And good news for those staying off property: you don’t need to stay at the resort to eat here. All of the restaurant’s pizzas can be served on a cauliflower crust and many gluten-eating diners have been known to order this version for themselves, as it’s delish. Sandwiches and burgers can be ordered on gluten-free buns. Enjoy these tasty dishes on the patio for an amazing view of the water or take some to go for the perfect picnic.
Spring Green General Store
The Spring Green General Store is a grocery, café and allergen-free paradise serving gluten-free, vegetarian-friendly and vegan options for breakfast, lunch and brunch. All their mouth-watering sandwiches can be served on gluten-free multigrain bread or wheat-free tortilla wraps (our favorite is the chicken salad sandwich); or grab a gluten-free burrito.
While you’re there, you and your group can also snag some adorable items such as hypoallergenic alpaca socks, an affirmation pen set or one of their beautiful puzzles. Visit this one-of-a-kind store to stock up for the rest of your perfect family getaway or just for a treat to enjoy together.
Homecoming
The aroma will be the first thing greeting you at this beautiful former elementary school that serves locally sourced, seasonal food focusing on pizza and handmade pasta. Share a pizza with friends, as gluten-free pizza dough is available for every type of pie. And most of the main courses - from the pork chops to the New York Strip - can be made gluten-free upon request. They don’t take reservations, so be prepared to wait at peak times. It’s worth it, especially if you snag a table in Homecoming’s back garden.
Arcadia Books / The Paper Crane Coffeehouse
A book, a cup of coffee and a sweet treat are the perfect trio. This bookstore/coffeehouse has them all, complete with gluten-free options. Their gluten-free menu rotates, but they always have something for everyone. It’s the ideal place to catch up with friends and enjoy a delicious afternoon.
No Rules Gallery & Bird of Paradise Tea
You never know what you’ll find when you wander into this tea shop/home decor store/café, as the local art and decor lining this tea shop is always rotating - but they do make sure to have some gluten-free goodies. If they have the gluten-free walnut brownies, grab the lot for yourself and your friends. They’re totally irresistible, and we have no idea how they make them without wheat flour. Pair it with Bird of Paradise’s Blood Orange herbal tea, and you’ll never want to leave. Mix and match the tea with the treats - there are no rules here.
The Shed
This one-of-a-kind spot is essentially the Spring Green watering hole, the gathering spot, the go-to on Friday nights. It’s the spot for cold beers, piping hot pizzas and plenty of gluten-free choices best shared with good company. All of their pizzas are available on a gluten-free crust at no additional cost, and you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Add on a trip to the soup and salad bar for a few extra bucks, and you’ll be overwhelmed with your options, with everything from the fresh veggies and cheeses to nuts and raisins to complete the meal.
