The world runs on laughter, right? Lucky for us, there’s no shortage of sidesplitting shows at Wisconsin theaters and comedy clubs. We’ve rounded up a few places as our top picks to catch local and national comedians. But beware, some performers love to poke a little fun of audience members in the front row, so choose your seat with caution!
Comedy Club on State – Madison
The location is perfect: Just two blocks from the Capitol building and smack dab in the middle of Madison’s bustling stretch of restaurants, bars, hotels and fabulous nightlife. Headline acts include standup comedians and personalities you’ll recognize from movies and television including MTV and Comedy Central. The club also hosts an open mic night every Wednesday for local, wanna-be comedians. Order a delicious cocktail, martinis, ice cream drink, craft beers, or wine. Reservations are recommended.
Comedy Café – Milwaukee
Milwaukee’s only 5-star comedy club and one that’s consistently rated a top comedy destination. Comedic legends such as Ellen DeGeneres, Tommy Chong and George Lopez have graced the stage in the more than two decades they’ve been open. The last Wednesday of each month is their showcase night, with free admission and drink specials.
ComedyCity – De Pere
This troupe of improvisational performers features four shows each week. Performances include short scenes, songs and sketches based on audience suggestions. So before you come, start thinking about answers to questions like: What’s your favorite movie, favorite vacation spot, funniest thing you’ve thrown out of your refrigerator… you know, all the basics. Reservations recommended.
Skyline Comedy Café – Appleton
Wisconsin’s Premier Comedy Club features hot national acts that are sure to leave you in stitches. Skyline Comedy Café hosts the best talent as seen on HBO, Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Chelsea Lately and more. Check each show for age requirements, purchase tickets in advance and come thirsty because there’s a two-drink minimum.
Comedy Sportz – Milwaukee
During this all-suggestion, all-improv interactive experience, two teams of “Actletes” compete on stage for your laughs! The audience gives creative input by shouting out topics and ideas for skits, and once in a while, an audience member is even brought on stage. This Milwaukee comedy club has shows appropriate for all ages with discounts offered to groups. Food and beverages are available. Reservations are recommended.
Be sure to keep an eye on Wisconsin theaters and other live performance venues. While they don’t specialize in comedy, great local and national acts often book shows accommodating larger crowds. Here are a few to keep on your radar:
- Riverside Theater – Milwaukee
- Majestic Theater – Madison
- Crystal Grand Music Theater – Wisconsin Dells
- Ho Chunk Casino – Black River Falls, Nekoosa, Wisconsin Dells and more
