Starting from a central hub, you and your friends can head out on four different loops totaling 24 miles. The trails in Black River State Forest are wider than normal singletrack with less difficult terrain, making it a great place to get comfortable with mountain biking.
Advanced riders can take advantage of the extra space to test their speed and endurance. With Black River Falls 15 minutes up the road, make sure to stop for a beer at Sand Creek Brewing Company to celebrate a day on the trails.
Tucked in nearby Neillsville you’ll find 30 miles of some of the best mountain biking that the Midwest has to offer. This epic trail system has something for everyone – wider trails with gentle climbs for beginners, and fast, tight singletrack that will prove a challenge for riders of all levels.
Make sure you pause at the sandstone bluffs to take in the beauty of your surroundings. The trailhead building has your bathroom and water needs covered, as well as maps of every trail. It will be tough to spend only one day on these trails, so consider spending a night at the Russell Memorial Campground and make the most of your experience.
It’s all about the views on this section of singletrack. Part of the Levis Mounds trail system, this trail has several paths that take you out to sandstone outcroppings with stunning views of the Clark County Forest. For an unforgettable experience, try some night riding to take advantage of the starry sky and nearby firepit!
Also part of Levis Mound, Upper Hermosa is an excellent trail for intermediate riders and features a variety of terrain. You’ll find a mix of roots, rocks, cliffs, a switchback section, and some great descents on the two mile trail. A great way to end your day of riding is to go from Upper Hermosa to Lower Hermosa for a fast descent right down to your car.
Travelling less than an hour north from Black River Falls will bring you to some great mountain biking in Eau Claire. A smaller trail system with just 10 miles, Lowes Creek provides a variety of terrains, difficulties, and great valley views. The routes are well marked, but be sure to keep your head up as many can be ridden in both directions.
The trail system is being added to and a pump track incorporated to hone in your handling skills. Once you’re done on the trails, head into downtown Eau Claire and check out The Plus for some creative pizzas and live music.
