Explore Lake Superior’s Wintry Shoreline with a Weekend in Bayfield
While many travelers flock to Bayfield in the warmer months, a winter getaway here promises unique adventures and striking landscapes you won’t find anywhere else. Because of its proximity to Lake Superior, this area usually sees higher snowfall than the rest of Wisconsin, producing the perfect conditions for winter fun. Read on to discover all there is to enjoy on a winter trip to Bayfield.
Play in the Snow
Take advantage of the winter weather by diving into snowy sports on your trip. Embrace the arctic vibes and take a dog sled tour with Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing. You and your group can learn to drive your own team or ride along with an experienced guide. All ages and abilities are welcome, and you can choose from trips that range from 2.5 to 4 hours.
If you prefer a slower pace, pack up your snowshoes and head to Frog Bay Tribal National Park, the first tribal national park in the United States. Wander almost 4,000 feet of undeveloped Lake Superior shoreline and if conditions are clear, you’ll be able to see some of the Apostle Islands in the distance.
Nearby, explore the glittering sandstone cliffs that form the Red Cliff Ice Caves. Part of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa reservation, the cliffs here become decorated with icy sculptures each winter, thanks to the water that continually seeps through the porous rock and out onto its face. Once exposed to the air, the water freezes into intricate crystals; long, jagged icicles; thick slabs of ice and everything in between. The show is a colorful one, too, thanks to the minerals in the rock, oxygen levels and other factors.
Take a guided tour with Rustic Makwa Den, a Native-owned service that will not only showcase the area's gorgeous natural scenery but will include a cultural exchange as your guides tell you about their Tribe's long history in this region.
