One day just isn't enough to explore Marinette County's 125-mile loop of 14 waterfalls along the Pike, Peshtigo, Thunder and Menominee rivers. The county breaks up the tour into four itineraries, and you can easily extend your visit to Wisconsin's northeastern border with accommodations ranging from simple cabins and cottages to modern condos and luxurious suites. Read on for five lodging recommendations along the route.
Directly adjacent to Dave's Falls County Park and only a short hike away from the falls – named for a logger who died at the site on the Pike River – this small, remote motel has three rental cottages. The two cabins sleep up to ten people, and a lodge with a private pavilion can accommodate up to 20 guests.
The pet-friendly inn's must-book rental is its authentic open-concept log cabin with a cozy Franklin fireplace and whimsical view of a stone wishing well shaped like a boat. All three cabins are fully furnished and have complete kitchens, with basic cable and linens provided.
Just a mile off the waterfall tour loop, this B&B offers adults-only serenity on 30 gorgeous acres along the Pike River. The innkeepers' wildlife camera has picked up deer, hawks, coyotes and bears throughout the wooded property.
The three rooms each include Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV with Dish service, a DVD player and access to a collection of more than 200 movies, with the honeymoon suite boasting its own fireplace and walkout patio overlooking the river. A hunting loft also is available seasonally.
This rugged resort has two outposts – one near the northeastern boundary of the waterfall tour loop and another closer to the southwestern edge. When you're not out chasing waterfalls, you can try some pulse-pounding whitewater rafting on the Menominee and Peshtigo rivers, or serene kayaking and standup paddle boarding on secluded lakes. Activities off the water include alpine tower and rock climbing, paintball, ziplining, golfing, snowmobile tours and even a mud obstacle course.
Accommodations range from riverbank tent camping to "glamping" in a yurt with a built-in skylight, and from primitive cabins to deluxe modern lodges.
These newer two-bedroom, one-bath condos along the Peshtigo River include a living room, full kitchen and patios with riverfront views, along with a boat slip and access to a banquet hall. All linens and some toiletries are provided, along with Wi-Fi, movies, games and puzzles.
Each of the nearly one dozen furnished condos is decorated in its own special theme, from the "Packers Place" to a "Dragon's Lair." For your stay, consider "Frostbite Falls," which pays homage to the county's "Waterfalls Capital of the Midwest" rank with magnificent artwork of waterfalls and woodlands.
