The 83-mile Mountain-Bay State Trail is one of the longest trails in the state. It passes through several small communities in Marathon, Shawano and Brown Counties, through a wide variety of landscapes, including farmlands, forests and wetlands and features numerous bridge crossings over rivers and streams. The level grade and smooth surface make this trail suitable for bicyclists, walkers and joggers. Each bicyclist age 16 or older needs a Wisconsin state trail pass while using the trail. The trail may bring a number of different users to the trail at the same time. It is important to use good trail etiquette to ensure the enjoyment and safety of all trail users. The trail is gravel-based in Shawano County and may be rough or soft in sections so the tread is more suitable for hybrid, mountain, or gravel bicycles. Condition descriptions for this trail are currently informed by the DNR Property Condition Notices map. When no alerts are active, trails are rated in fair condition. Throughout the season, please use caution after weather events and consider refraining from using the trail if leaving ruts in the surface, as deep footprints and bike tire ruts can impact the long-term smoothness of the trail.
