Top August Events: Festivals, Fiestas and Food

The lineup is packed for August and these events are calling your name. Check ‘em out and mark your calendars!

U.S. Open Chainsaw Sculpture ChampionshipsEau Claire (Aug. 7-10, 2014)

Watch as world-renowned competitors combine the ruggedness of logging with the creativity of carving to make wooden masterpieces. Each contestant is given a single log, chainsaw and 20 hours to craft a work of art. Warning: don’t try this at home 

Hamburger Fest and Balloon RallySeymour (Aug. 8-10, 2014)

The official “Home of the Hamburger” honors burger inventor Charles Nagreen with this three-day celebration. On Saturday, witness the world’s largest hamburger parade and sample a 190 lb. cheeseburger before taking a plunge down the 310-foot ketchup slide. For a second helping of fun, head to the Balloon Rally. Hot air balloons hit the skies at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a balloon glow to follow at dusk.

Lake Superior Dragon Boat FestivalSuperior (Aug. 22-23, 2014)

This annual festival showcases one of the world’s fastest growing, and most exciting, water sports – dragon boat racing. Catch camaraderie at its finest as teams of 22 paddle 450 grueling meters at Barker’s Island. Make sure to snap pictures of these elaborately decorated Asian-inspired cruisers before kicking back from the shores and delighting in fantastic food, music and crafts. Admission is free!

Mexican FiestaMilwaukee (Aug. 22-24, 2014)

Each summer the authentic scents, sights and songs of Mexico visit Milwaukee’s lakefront for a three-day fiesta. Not only is this cultural fest complete with traditional Mexican cuisine and live Mariachi bands, but the fest also pays it forward by awarding educational scholarships to local Hispanic students. Dance on over from noon to 3:00 p.m. for free admission on Friday and catch the same deal from noon to 1:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. 

ArtstreetGreen Bay (Aug. 22-24, 2014)

Stroll the streets of downtown Green Bay for a weekend of fine art, entertainment and food o’ plenty. The event kicks off Friday night with the special Preview Art Fair. Saturday and Sunday offer activities for art lovers of every kind with edible art, children’s art, free theatrical performances and more.

Outdoor Tug of WarMadison (Aug. 28, 2014)

The Tug of War International Federation (TWIF) presents the 2014 Outdoor World Championship! This event features the top tug of war athletes from across the globe battling for the ultimate tug of war title.

40th Annual Wisconsin State Cow Chip ThrowPrairie du Sac (Aug. 29-30, 2014)

This uniquely Wisconsin event challenges more than 800 competitors to throw dried, flattened… ahem, cow pies as far as they can. With a current record of 248 feet, this event is not for novices. The all-weekend festivity includes a run/walk, arts and crafts and even a chip throwing competition for kids 

Cheese-A-PaloozaKenosha (Aug. 30, 2014)

We’re drooling for Kenosha’s first-ever grilled cheese and mac & cheese invitational. Enjoy 13 hours of live entertainment, celebrity chefs and eating competitions that will put the record books to shame.
