The holiday frenzy is winding down and it’s time to retire the ugly Christmas sweater for another year (thank goodness). Now that your schedules are clearing up, we have a few suggestions. From snow sculpture competitions to snowmobile racing, and from bald eagle watching to winter festivals – here’s what we recommend to take you through the month of January in the badger state.
The Big Chill – Racine (Jan. 10-12, 2014)
See some of the greatest snow sculptors in Wisconsin battle it out for a chance to advance to the U.S. National Championship. Even Michelangelo would be impressed with these talented folks and larger-than- life creations.
AMSOIL World Championship Snowmobile Derby – Eagle River (Jan. 16-19, 2014)
On your mark. Get set. Go….to the (self-proclaimed) Snowmobile Capital of the World. This exhilarating World Championship Snowmobile Derby is the ultimate racing event boasting 1,400+ entries and over 30,000 spectators.
Bald Eagle Watching Days – Prairie du Sac (Jan. 17-18, 2014)
Watch these majestic creatures dance across the skies of Prairie du Sac. There will be a live “Birds of Prey” show Friday night and bird-watching events on Saturday with the release of a rehabilitated eagle.
Phillips Flurry 5k and 10k Snowshoe Race/Walk – Phillips (Jan. 25, 2014)
Groomed ski trails will take you over rolling terrain and through the beautiful school forest. But you better bring your ‘A’ game, this trail isn’t a simple trek in the woods to grandma’s house! Post race, warm up with some chili and something sweet from the bake sale.
Snowflake Ski Jumping Tournament – Westby (Jan. 31- Feb. 1, 2014)
Competitors from the U.S. and around the world gather to tackle the 118-meter Olympic-size hill and hopefully stick a perfect landing. This is one event you won’t want to miss.
Fish Creek Winter Festival – Fish Creek (Jan. 31- Feb. 2, 2014)
Even Ol’ Man Winter enjoys a good party and Fish Creek is just the place. Take a ride on the trolley, admire the ice sculptures, hit the trails on a candlelight cross-country ski excursion and partake in some not-so-average winter activities (can you say costumed fun run?).
